If your Polk subwoofer is not working, first identify its exact model and whether it is a wired powered subwoofer connected to a receiver or a wireless subwoofer supplied with a sound bar. Their inputs, indicator lights, and recovery steps differ. Record the model number, light pattern, and whether sound stopped or never worked; then follow the checks for that product family.
Start by identifying the Polk subwoofer and symptom
Find the model number on the subwoofer’s label or in its manual. PSW and HTS models are examples of conventional powered subwoofers that connect to a receiver by cable. React, MagniFi Mini AX, and Signa S4 subwoofers are wireless components of particular Polk sound-bar systems. Do not apply one family’s light meanings, connectors, reset steps, or pairing controls to another.
- No power: The subwoofer appears off or does not respond.
- No sound: It appears powered but produces no bass.
- Connection or indicator issue: A light is steady, flashing, or showing standby behavior.
- Hum or noise: The subwoofer makes a persistent sound even when audio is not playing.
Use the manual for the exact model when checking indicators or controls. Polk’s support page provides access to manuals and product support.
If there is no sound from the subwoofer
Wired PSW or HTS subwoofer connected to a receiver
- Check the signal path. Confirm the receiver’s Sub Out is connected to the subwoofer’s matching line-level or LFE input. Inspect both ends of the cable and reseat them. Only use this check if your equipment has those wired connections.
- Enable the subwoofer in the receiver. Check the receiver’s speaker or bass setup and make sure the subwoofer is enabled. The PSW-111 manual specifically asks: “If hookup is ‘Sub Out’ to right LINE IN, is your receiver set to ‘Subwoofer—yes’” (Polk PSW-111 Owner’s Manual).
- Check speaker-level wiring, if used. For a speaker-wire connection, check the polarity and make sure conductors are securely connected to the corresponding terminals. This check does not apply to an RCA/LFE-only connection.
- Test with known audio. Play content with bass and verify the receiver is actually outputting a subwoofer signal. A subwoofer may remain in standby if it does not detect a signal; documented PSW models use signal sensing for auto-on/off (Polk PSW-10/12 Owner’s Manual).
If a wired RCA/LFE cable is missing or damaged, replacing it may help when the receiver has a Sub Out and the subwoofer has a compatible line-level/LFE input. Polk lists LFE and RCA line-level inputs for the HTS 12. A cable cannot fix a wireless pairing problem, an incorrect receiver setting, or an internal amplifier or driver fault.

Wireless React or MagniFi Mini AX subwoofer
- Make sure the sound bar is powered on and playing audio, and confirm the subwoofer’s power cable is secure.
- Check the bass setting and the status indicators on both the sound bar and subwoofer, using the guide for your specific system.
- If the system still has no subwoofer audio, unplug the subwoofer’s power for 30 seconds, then reconnect it. Polk documents this power cycle for both React and MagniFi Mini AX.
- Follow the product guide’s pairing instructions if the subwoofer remains disconnected. React’s quick-start guide says a flashing green light means to reconnect the subwoofer to the sound bar using its “Connect Your Subwoofer” instructions. MagniFi Mini AX has its own CONNECT-button sequence; use its guide rather than React’s steps.
Wireless Signa S4 subwoofer
If no audio comes from the Signa S4 subwoofer, use the Signa S4 web manual’s procedure to wirelessly connect the sound bar and subwoofer again. Do not assume the React or MagniFi Mini AX pairing controls apply to Signa S4 (Polk Signa S4 manual).
If the subwoofer has no power or its light is red
Check that the power cable is firmly connected at the subwoofer and outlet. For a wireless sound-bar system, also check that the sound bar is on and playing audio before diagnosing the subwoofer. If the unit remains off, consult the model’s manual for its power and indicator behavior.

A red or standby light alone does not establish that the subwoofer has failed. Indicator meanings vary by model, and a PSW subwoofer may enter standby when it does not detect an audio signal. React’s documented flashing-green status calls for reconnecting, while MagniFi Mini AX and Signa S4 have their own status and connection procedures. Use the exact model guide rather than treating every red light as the same fault.

For the legacy PSW 303/404/505 series, Polk says, “Most hum problems are caused by ‘ground loops.’” Its manual describes disconnecting TV or VCR coax as an isolation check, and also identifies faulty home wiring and light dimmers as possible noise sources (Polk PSW 303/404/505 Owner’s Manual).

Treat that coax procedure as legacy guidance for the named series, not a universal fix for modern systems. If you suspect faulty AC wiring, the manual advises consulting a licensed electrician. Do not open the subwoofer to investigate electrical noise.

If power, the appropriate wired signal path or wireless pairing, and documented external checks do not resolve the fault, check the model’s warranty and support options before attempting internal repair. Polk’s US support page offers manuals, product FAQs, warranty information, registration, archive lookup, and an authorized service-center search.
