If a DIY phone shows 2G or 3G but not 4G, start by checking the network mode, mobile-data SIM, SIM fit, and local coverage. If LTE appears but data or calls fail, troubleshoot those separately: APN settings affect data, while VoLTE/IMS and carrier provisioning affect calls. A SIM alone cannot add LTE support to incompatible hardware.
First identify what is failing
“No 4G” can mean the modem never registers on LTE, LTE is registered but mobile data does not work, or data works while calls fail. Those symptoms point to different causes. Note whether the phone has an LTE/4G indicator, whether mobile data works, and whether calls and SMS work. Check whether Wi-Fi works, and whether another device on the same carrier has service at that location.
Check the basic network settings
- Make sure airplane mode is off and mobile data is on.
- If the build has two SIMs, confirm the intended SIM is selected for mobile data.
- Set the preferred network mode to an option that includes LTE or 4G.
Android menu names and available choices differ by device, operating-system version, and modem software. Use the instructions for the exact handset or cellular module rather than relying on a universal menu path. Google’s Pixel mobile-network guide describes the setting roles on Pixel phones, but its menus are not guaranteed to match a DIY build.

Check the SIM and local LTE coverage
Follow the hardware maker’s safe-shutdown instructions before removing a SIM if required. Reseat it, and inspect the card and slot for visible damage or contamination. A phone recognizing a SIM does not prove that the SIM has active service or that LTE will work.

Test in another location known to have the carrier’s LTE service. If possible, try the SIM in a known-working, compatible phone, or try a known-working SIM from the same carrier in the DIY phone. These swaps help separate a SIM, account, or coverage issue from a device or modem issue. The carrier’s coverage and device-support information is more useful than assuming a signal in one location proves LTE availability everywhere.
Refresh the connection and verify APN settings
- Restart the phone, or turn airplane mode on briefly and then off, to prompt a fresh network attachment.
- Check the carrier’s current APN instructions for your specific plan and modem. If the device offers a reset-to-default APN option, use it before entering values manually.
- If LTE still will not register or data remains unusable, consider resetting mobile-network settings using the device maker’s instructions. On some devices, a network reset also deletes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings.
Do not copy an APN from an unrelated carrier or modem guide. APN values can depend on the carrier and service plan; your carrier or modem vendor is the right source for the values that apply to your setup. Google documents network-reset behavior for Pixel phones, but other builds may behave differently.

Confirm the modem and carrier are compatible
Record the exact phone or modem model and hardware variant, the country and carrier, the SIM plan, and whether the device is unlocked where required. Compare the modem’s supported LTE bands and technologies with the carrier’s current local network specifications, then check whether the carrier accepts that exact device.

Frequency support and carrier acceptance are separate checks. A modem may support some of a carrier’s frequencies yet still lack full coverage, perform less well in some areas, or fail the carrier’s device-eligibility requirements. For US T-Mobile BYOD, the carrier says, “Your device must support the frequencies used by T-Mobile.” That requirement is specific to T-Mobile; use the relevant carrier’s own current guidance elsewhere. T-Mobile also recommends checking device eligibility and VoLTE support, and warns that LTE coverage is not guaranteed for every non-carrier device or location. See its BYOD guide.

A SIM card cannot make a modem support bands or radio technologies absent from its hardware. If you are comparing candidate modules, check supported LTE bands, exact-model carrier eligibility and unlock status, whether your need is data or VoLTE calling, and the interface and software support required by your phone build. Without a country, carrier, and candidate models, there is no sound basis for ranking specific modems.
Separate LTE data problems from calling problems
If LTE data works but calls do not, focus on voice service rather than treating it as an LTE-data failure. Check whether the carrier and exact device support and provision VoLTE, and whether the modem successfully registers with IMS. Carrier and modem configurations vary; there is no universal IMS APN or modem command to apply safely.

Telenor IoT’s VoLTE testing guidance describes model-dependent configuration, including data and IMS APN considerations in its own setup context. Its example values should not be copied to another carrier. Xiaomi explains that calls on an LTE-only network require IMS/VoLTE support, while networks that retain 2G or 3G may route calls through circuit-switched fallback. That distinction concerns calls; VoLTE is not, by itself, a requirement for LTE data registration. See Xiaomi’s LTE-band and calling FAQ.
Use a DIY build example carefully
The OURS Project documents an open-source Raspberry Pi-based OURphone using a Waveshare 4G HAT with a SIM7600 cellular modem; the HAT handles cellular service with a SIM, and the startup script configures 4G internet. Its documentation is an example of one DIY architecture, not evidence that the same HAT will fix an existing phone’s LTE problem. If you are assembling a similar build, a useful parts-list search phrase is “SIM7600 4G LTE HAT for Raspberry Pi.” Before buying or installing one, check the exact HAT variant, supported bands, carrier acceptance, and current availability. What to give carrier or hardware support
If the checks above do not isolate the fault, provide support with the exact modem or handset model and variant, country and carrier, SIM and account status, unlock status, and what works: LTE registration, mobile data, calls, and SMS. Include any displayed status or error information. State whether another device or SIM worked in the same location. This information helps support distinguish coverage or account problems from a band, provisioning, APN, or hardware issue.
