To transport second-hand furniture safely, first check that it fits through the seller’s access route and into the vehicle’s usable space. Then protect delicate surfaces, secure the piece so it cannot shift, and plan how you will carry and unload it. Use your car only if the item fits without obstructing the driver or compromising passenger safety; otherwise, arrange a suitable van or professional delivery.
Measure the furniture, vehicle and access route
Ask the seller for the item’s approximate height, width and depth, and whether it can be dismantled safely. Measure the vehicle’s usable load space and openings—not just its advertised cargo volume. Seats, doorways and the shape of the item can determine whether it will fit.
Check the full route at both ends: the seller’s doorway, stairs or hallways, your own access points, and the path from the vehicle to the room where the furniture will go. A piece that fits inside a car or van may still be impossible to carry through a narrow doorway or around a landing.
Choose a car, van or delivery
Compare the options by fit, safe restraint, pickup timing, distance, available carrying help and total cost. A suitable vehicle is more important than choosing the cheapest option: do not force a piece into a space where it could move, block your view or interfere with controls.

No universal vehicle capacity, rental price or delivery price applies to every purchase. Check the particular item, vehicle and local provider before committing.
Protect surfaces and stop the item moving
Use suitable padding to protect corners, glass, polished surfaces and upholstery. Moving blankets or pads can also help fill gaps, but padding is not a restraint. Queensland Government guidance recommends tightly packing furniture and filling spaces with dunnage or packing material to reduce movement and slackened lashings. Place the furniture against the bulkhead where possible. Use suitable straps attached to sound vehicle anchor points to restrain large or heavy pieces, and pack remaining gaps so the load cannot slide. Do not assume that a heavy item will stay put just because it is difficult to move while stationary. DVSA says loads must be secure regardless of the vehicle, load size or journey length, and notes that unsecured loads can affect handling and braking. DVSA load-security guidance.

Arrange collection and unloading before pickup
Agree a collection time and confirm the item will be ready and accessible. Decide who will help carry it, how it will be moved through the property, and where the vehicle can be parked for loading and unloading. Plan the same details at your destination.

Check the load before setting off
- Confirm the furniture is stable and restrained; straps are attached to appropriate anchor points.
- Fill gaps where needed, and make sure padding is protecting surfaces rather than standing in for restraints.
- Check that the load does not block your view, access to controls or passenger safety.
- Recheck restraints during the journey, particularly after sharp braking or a sudden swerve, as DVSA advises. DVSA load-security guidance.
