You can move your existing number to an iPhone with no SIM tray by transferring it to the phone’s built-in eSIM. If your carrier supports eSIM Quick Transfer, start on the new iPhone and confirm the move on your old iPhone. If that option is unavailable, ask your carrier to activate the eSIM or provide its supported setup method, such as a QR code, link, app, or manual details.
What you need to know before transferring your number
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into supported iPhone models, so a physical SIM tray is not required to activate an eSIM line. Some iPhone 14 and later models are eSIM-only, though available transfer methods vary by iPhone model, country or region, and carrier. See Apple’s eSIM setup guide and check your provider in Apple’s wireless carrier support directory.
Quick Transfer moves the existing line from the old phone to the new one; it does not keep the number active on both phones. Apple says that after the number transfers, it stops working on the previous iPhone. Your carrier determines whether Quick Transfer is available for your line.
Transfer from another iPhone with Quick Transfer
Apple’s listed Quick Transfer requirements are the same Apple Account signed in on both iPhones, the previous iPhone unlocked with its passcode, the phones close together with Bluetooth enabled, and iOS 18.4 or later on both devices. These software requirements can change; check Apple’s current eSIM instructions if your settings or prompts differ.

- Connect the new iPhone to a network. Use Wi-Fi or another available network if possible; Apple recommends a connection when adding an eSIM.
- Start the transfer. During the new iPhone’s initial setup, follow a cellular transfer prompt if one appears. If setup is complete, go to Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions) > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Choose the line to move. Select the number or plan to transfer, or choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone if shown.
- Confirm on the old iPhone. Keep the phones nearby, unlock the old iPhone, and accept its transfer prompt. Enter a verification code if the devices request one.
- Wait for activation. Follow the on-screen instructions until the new iPhone shows the cellular plan as active. When it activates, the old SIM stops working.
If Quick Transfer is missing or does not work
A missing transfer option does not mean that a SIM tray or adapter is needed. Quick Transfer depends on carrier support as well as the device and account requirements. Check that both phones meet Apple’s requirements, that the old iPhone is nearby and can be unlocked, and that Bluetooth is on. Then contact your carrier to confirm whether your plan and line support Quick Transfer.
If the carrier does not offer Quick Transfer, ask which eSIM activation or reissue method it supports for your account. Apple documents these alternatives:

- Carrier activation: The provider assigns the eSIM to your device or account.
- QR code: The provider gives you a code to scan during eSIM setup.
- Carrier link or app: The provider directs you to an activation link or its app.
- Manual entry: The provider supplies details to enter in the iPhone’s eSIM settings.
The carrier controls the exact process and any identity verification. Use a QR code or activation details supplied by the carrier; do not assume an old code is still valid unless the provider confirms it. Apple describes the available setup paths in its eSIM setup instructions.

Contact your carrier and ask it to move your existing number to the new iPhone’s eSIM. The provider may activate the eSIM directly or issue a QR code or another supported activation method. Apple notes that direct transfer from a non-Apple phone is available only with some providers and supported device combinations; it is not a universal option. Follow the provider’s instructions for your specific line.

Which transfer method should you use?

Because no carrier, country, plan, or old-phone model is specified, there is no single method that can be guaranteed for every line. Check Apple’s carrier directory, then confirm the method for your particular number with the carrier.

No physical product is needed for the documented eSIM transfer. A SIM eject tool cannot help on an iPhone with no tray, and a physical SIM adapter does not convert or transfer a carrier number into an eSIM. Any QR code or activation credentials must come from your carrier.
