To transfer photos to a Googlebook, use an SD card for a camera, a USB cable for an Android phone, or Google Photos for cloud access from Android, iPhone, or iPad. Once the photos are available, open saved files for basic edits on the Chromebook, or use Google Photos for more advanced editing.
Choose the transfer method that fits your device

The USB instructions below are for Android. For iPhone and iPad, Google’s camera-photo guidance describes backing up to Google Photos from the device; it does not establish a direct USB import workflow for those devices.
Transfer photos from a camera SD card
- Sign in to the Chromebook.
- Remove the SD card from the camera.
- Insert the card into the Chromebook’s SD slot, if it has one. Google notes that some Chromebooks do not include an SD slot.
- Open the Files app and locate the card’s photos. Copy or drag the files into a folder on the Chromebook if you want local copies for editing.
If your Chromebook has no suitable slot, you may need an SD card reader that matches both the camera card and a port on the Chromebook. This is a general accessory option, not a guarantee that a particular reader or card format will work with every Googlebook. Check the computer’s ports and the card format before choosing one.

Transfer photos from an Android phone with USB
- Connect the phone to the Chromebook with a USB cable.
- Unlock the phone.
- On the phone, tap the notification that says “Charging this device via USB.”
- Under “Use USB for,” choose “File Transfer.”
- On the Chromebook, open the Files app and drag the photos you want into the destination folder. Google describes this step as: “On your Chromebook, the Files app opens. Use it to drag files.” See Google’s file-transfer instructions.
- When the transfer is complete, unplug the cable.
If the phone does not appear
- Check that the phone is unlocked and that “File Transfer” is selected as the USB mode.
- Try a different cable that supports data transfer. Google warns that some USB cables can charge a device but cannot transfer files; the cable must also fit both devices. See Google’s troubleshooting guidance.
Use Google Photos for cloud access
Google says Android, iPhone, and iPad photos can be backed up to Google Photos directly from the device. On the Chromebook, sign in to the Google account used for Photos and open its photo content. This gives you an account-based cloud route rather than a direct local copy through a cable.

Google’s guidance says backed-up photos count toward Google Drive storage quota. It does not establish that this method preserves a particular local folder structure, so use a direct card or USB transfer when you specifically need files saved into Chromebook folders.
Edit the transferred photos
For photos saved on the Chromebook, Chromebook Help supports opening images and making basic edits. Google points to Google Photos for more advanced editing. Available controls may vary as the interfaces change; consult Chromebook Help for the current guidance.

Choose local transfer when you need files in Chromebook folders and have a compatible card slot or data-capable cable. Choose Google Photos when you want account-based access to photos backed up from a supported phone or tablet and are comfortable using the account’s storage quota.
