To move several family phone numbers, choose the new carrier and have it start a transfer for each number you want to keep. Gather the old account details, confirm any required transfer PINs and port-out locks, and leave the old account and lines active until every transfer finishes. The PIN rules depend on the carrier and whether the account is consumer or business, so verify them for the specific account.

Before you start, list every line you intend to move

Make one checklist for the household. For each number, note who uses it and whether it belongs to a phone, tablet, watch, hotspot, or another connected device. Tell the receiving carrier exactly which phone numbers should transfer; do not assume that moving the main phone line moves every other line or service.

Agree on the new account arrangement and plan with the receiving carrier, then ask that carrier to initiate the transfers. The carrier’s transfer-in process is the place to confirm which lines it can accept and what information it needs. T-Mobile’s published checklist, for example, requests each number, the current provider, account number, billing address and ZIP code, and the applicable transfer PIN or password. It also advises checking device unlock and port eligibility, clearing relevant account blocks, and settling balances with the old provider. Requirements can differ by carrier. The FCC describes the baseline information used to validate simple number ports as the 10-digit telephone number, customer account number, five-digit ZIP code, and passcode if applicable. That regulatory framework is useful context, not a guarantee that every carrier’s interface or an unusual account will use the same visible steps. FCC order on number porting

Before generating a PIN, check the old account’s user permissions. The primary account holder—or an authorized user, where the carrier permits it—may need to request or create the code. An account login password, account security PIN, and temporary number-transfer PIN are not necessarily interchangeable.

Check the correct PIN and port-lock procedure for your account

Do not assume one PIN rule applies to every carrier, line, or account type. The current carrier’s instructions for the actual account take precedence.

T-Mobile personal accounts

T-Mobile says the primary account holder generates a Temporary Port Out PIN for a line being moved. Port Out Protection is applied per line, so disable the protection on each line you are transferring. T-Mobile’s transfer-in guidance asks for the number or numbers, current provider, account number, billing address and ZIP code, and the transfer PIN or password. It estimates that wireless transfers typically take 10 minutes to 3 hours; that is T-Mobile’s estimate, not a general timing promise for other carriers or a whole family’s transfer. Verizon consumer accounts

Verizon’s consumer FAQ says one account-level Number Transfer PIN can authorize any or all lines on that account. Specify exactly which lines are moving. The FAQ says the PIN expires after seven days, so check the current instructions before requesting or using one. Verizon: Number Transfer PIN FAQs

Verizon Business accounts

Verizon Business describes a different process: its Number Transfer PIN is unique to each line, and Number Lock must be disabled. The business page directs requests involving 10 or more lines to its bulk-support route. Keep the business account open until transfers are complete. Do not apply the consumer-account PIN instructions to a business account. Verizon Business: Number Transfer PIN FAQs

AT&T wireless accounts

AT&T says primary online users can request a Number Transfer PIN online or in the app; eligible wireless users can also call *PORT and provide the account passcode. Wireless Account Lock must be turned off before a number can transfer. AT&T’s page, last updated August 21, 2026, says Business Wireless users have a distinct process and cannot use the consumer mobile-device or app methods described there. Submit each transfer through the new carrier

  1. Tell the receiving carrier which numbers to move. Provide the requested details for each line, using the old account’s exact billing information and the correct authorization credential.
  2. Ask the carrier to start the ports. Follow its process for submitting multiple numbers and ask how to check each transfer’s status. A household may coordinate the requests together, but authorization and progress are still tied to line and account details.
  3. Watch for status messages and requests for action. The account owner and the family members who receive verification texts should be available while the transfers are pending.
  4. Keep the old account open and the lines active. Do not cancel the old service yourself before the numbers port. Verizon Business says to keep the account open until completion; T-Mobile notes that both services may be active during the transition. Verify the new service, then review the old account

When a line shows as transferred, test incoming and outgoing calls and texts on its new service. Check each number separately rather than treating the first completed port as proof that the rest of the household is finished.

After the intended ports are complete, review the old account for device-payment balances, contract-related charges, connected-device lines, or other services that did not transfer. Verizon Business notes that early termination fees and device payment balances may apply. It also says connected-device lines may need separate cancellation if the last phone line moves. Protect transfer credentials while coordinating the family

A transfer PIN authorizes a significant account change. Generate it only through the carrier’s official app, website, or support channel, and share it only with the receiving carrier’s authorized porting process. Verizon warns customers to guard the Number Transfer PIN and account number; T-Mobile describes Port Out Protection as a per-line block against unauthorized transfers. Verizon: Number Transfer PIN FAQs T-Mobile Support: Transfer your phone number

For a family account, coordinate with the account owner and the people who will receive carrier verification messages. Avoid putting transfer PINs in a shared document or sending them to a broad family group chat.

When this process may not fit

Prepaid, business, government, landline, disconnected, suspended, or otherwise exceptional accounts can follow different procedures. Contact the current carrier for the right authorization and eligibility steps in those cases. Carrier support instructions can change, so check the applicable current page before starting a transfer.
