You can transfer message history and SMS from Android to iPhone with Apple’s Move to iOS process during iPhone setup. Apple does not promise a 100% success rate or a fixed transfer time, so check the messages on the iPhone when setup finishes.
What transfers, and what you need to know first
Apple lists message history and SMS messages among the content that can move with Move to iOS, alongside contacts, photos, files, call history, calendars and other data. The transfer is an option during iPhone setup; it is not a guarantee that every attempt will finish successfully. Apple says the time depends on how much content is being moved. Apple’s Move to iOS instructions include troubleshooting steps, but give no success-rate figure or fixed duration.
- The iPhone must be at its initial setup flow for the app-based transfer. If it is already configured, Apple’s stated route is to erase it and start setup again, or move content manually.
- Messages can transfer over Wi-Fi, or through a compatible direct USB-C cable connection. Apple says a cable may be faster; it is optional.
- Make sure the iPhone has enough free storage for the content being moved. Insufficient space can lead to partial transfer or an iPhone that appears full even though the transfer did not finish.
Prepare both phones
- Charge both devices and connect them to power for the transfer.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on Android. If using a cable, confirm both phones support the same compatible connection and use a data-transfer cable.
- Install and open Move to iOS on Android from Google Play. Apple notes that some supported devices may offer a transfer-without-app route; check the current Apple instructions for compatibility.
- Check available iPhone storage against the content you want to move.
Transfer messages during iPhone setup
- Turn on the iPhone and proceed through setup until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Choose From Android, then Transfer with App.
- Open Move to iOS on Android and follow the prompts. Continue on iPhone until a six- or ten-digit code appears, then enter it on Android. Join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone when prompted.
- Select the message content to transfer on Android and start the transfer. Google’s Android switching instructions also direct users to select content and follow Move to iOS prompts.
- Keep both phones nearby, powered, and undisturbed. Leave Move to iOS open on Android until the loading bar on the iPhone finishes—even if Android appears to be done. Do not switch to another app or answer a call during the transfer.
Choose Wi-Fi or a USB-C cable

| Direct USB-C cable | Connects the phones directly if their ports and cable are compatible. Apple says this may be faster; it does not publish a guaranteed time saving. |
Both options use the setup-time Move to iOS workflow. Check the ports on both phones before choosing a cable; a cable that only charges may not support data transfer. Apple describes the cable option in its Move to iOS guide.

Verify messages after setup
Once setup is complete, open Messages on the iPhone. Check recent conversations and group chats rather than assuming the transfer succeeded based only on the Android screen. Google also recommends checking the result in Messages after switching. If threads or messages are missing, consult Apple’s transfer troubleshooting guidance before treating the migration as complete.

If the iPhone is already set up
Apple’s app-based transfer takes place during iPhone setup. To use it after completing setup, Apple says to erase the iPhone and begin again. Erasing removes data on the iPhone, so preserve anything important first. If you do not want to erase it, Apple directs users to move content manually; however, the reviewed instructions do not establish a manual method that imports a complete Android message history into the iPhone’s Messages app. Copying files by hand should not be treated as a way to recreate message threads.
Troubleshoot a transfer that stalls or misses messages
- Keep Move to iOS open: Switching Android apps or taking a call before completion can prevent content from transferring.
- Stop Wi-Fi switching: Turn off Android settings or apps that optimize or switch networks, and forget known networks before retrying. Apple cites Sprint Connections Optimizer and Smart Network Switch as examples.
- Restart and retry: Restart both phones and try again with Android cellular data turned off.
- Check storage: Confirm the selected content fits in the iPhone’s available space. If the transfer ran out of room or left the iPhone apparently full without completing, Apple advises erasing and retrying after confirming there is enough space.
- Confirm on iPhone: Open Messages and inspect the threads you expected to move; do not rely solely on the Android completion screen.
