The easiest time to move data is while setting up your new Android phone. You can copy directly with a cable or over Wi-Fi, or restore a Google Account backup if the old phone is unavailable. Keep the old phone until you have checked the new one: not every file, app, or account is included in the transfer.
Choose the transfer method that fits your situation

Google says cable and wireless direct copying support the same data. The available screens and options can vary by phone model and Android version. Start the copy during new-phone setup when possible; on some devices, the option may not be available later. Google’s Android setup guide explains the transfer choices.
Prepare both phones before you start
- Charge both phones and keep the old phone nearby.
- Make sure you know the old phone’s PIN, pattern, or password so you can unlock it.
- Connect the new phone to Wi-Fi or another active internet connection. For wireless copying, both phones need internet access during setup.
- Check that the new phone has enough storage for the information you want to move.
- Set aside time. Google says copying may take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the phones and the amount of data.
- If you rely on WhatsApp chats, confirm that WhatsApp backup is enabled on the old phone.
Way 1: Copy data with a cable during setup
- Turn on the new phone and follow its setup prompts until it asks whether you want to copy apps and data. Choose the copy option.
- Unlock the old phone when prompted.
- Connect the phones using a compatible cable. Check the ports on both devices first; if the cable does not fit both, you may need an adapter.
- Follow the new phone’s prompts to select what to copy, then wait for the transfer to finish.
- Sign in to a Google Account during setup for a more complete transfer, as Google recommends.
The cable method avoids wireless pairing, but it still depends on having a cable and, if needed, an adapter that work with both phones.

Way 2: Copy data wirelessly during setup
- On the new phone, begin setup and choose the option to copy without a cable or to transfer wirelessly. Wording varies by device.
- On the old phone, follow the instructions shown on the new phone. Google describes opening the Google app and searching for set up my device.
- Confirm that the shapes and numbers displayed on both phones match, then follow the prompts to connect them.
- Select the data to copy on the new phone and leave both devices connected while the transfer runs.
Wireless transfer avoids needing a compatible cable, but both phones need internet access during setup. If the instructions or labels differ, follow the screens shown on your particular devices.

Way 3: Restore a Google Account backup
Use this option if you cannot access the old phone and a backup was already enabled there. A backup cannot restore information that was never backed up.
- During setup on the new phone, connect to the internet and sign in to the Google Account associated with the backup.
- Choose the backup you want to restore and select the available data types.
- If prompted, enter the old phone’s PIN, pattern, or password.
- Allow the restore to run, then check your apps and important information on the new phone.
To review backup settings on a phone, open Settings > Google > Backup and restore > Backup. Google says a device can back up automatically over Wi-Fi when cloud backup is enabled. See Google’s Android backup and restore instructions for details.

What transfers—and what you may need to move separately
During Android setup, Google says the copy can include apps and certain app data, music, photos and videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages and their multimedia, most phone settings, wallpaper, and call history. What appears can depend on the phone and Android version.

Some information may not transfer through setup copying. Google lists these examples:

- Downloads such as PDFs and media stored in hidden folders.
- Apps installed outside Google Play.
- Data from apps that do not use Android backup.
- Non-Google accounts and their data, plus contacts or calendars synced with other services.
- Ringtones and some settings.
WhatsApp chats and data are restored from the cloud after you sign in on the new Android phone and open WhatsApp, provided WhatsApp backup was enabled on the old device. For other apps and accounts, check their own backup or sign-in requirements; the Android setup copy does not cover every service.
If you already finished setting up the new phone
Some phones offer a Finish setting up option for a few days after initial setup. Availability depends on the device, and Google notes that the original copy option may not remain available on every phone.

Google’s troubleshooting guidance says a transfer-from-another-device option in Settings is available on Android 17 and later and on select earlier devices. The exact route depends on the phone maker and model; check the manufacturer’s support information if you cannot find it. Google’s troubleshooting page covers transfer problems and post-setup options.

Do not reset the old phone just because setup reports that copying is complete. Check the new phone while you can still access the original:

- Open important apps and confirm you can sign in and see the data you need.
- Check photos, videos, downloads, and files, including anything stored outside the usual folders.
- Verify contacts, calendars, messages, and call history that matter to you.
- Open WhatsApp and confirm the chats you expected have been restored.
If something is missing, keep the old phone intact and use the relevant app, account, or phone-maker instructions to transfer or recover it before wiping the device.
