The right transfer method depends on where the book came from. For a book bought from Amazon, deliver it to your registered Kindle through your Amazon account. For a personal document, use Send to Kindle from a phone or computer, or copy it from a computer to the Kindle over USB. Amazon’s documented USB workflow connects the Kindle to a computer; it does not describe importing files by plugging a flash drive directly into the Kindle.

Choose the right way to transfer a book

What you have Recommended method What to know
A book purchased from Amazon Deliver it from your Amazon account Use the account that bought the book and select your registered Kindle.
A personal file on a phone or computer Send to Kindle Amazon lists supported file types and a limit of 200 MB per file for this service.
A personal file on a computer, with no wireless transfer wanted Connect the Kindle to the computer by USB The steps differ on Windows and Mac; newer Kindle models on Mac require Amazon’s app for USB file management.
A file on a USB flash drive Copy it to a computer first, then use Send to Kindle or connect the Kindle to that computer Amazon’s cited instructions describe computer-to-Kindle transfer, not direct flash-drive import.

Send a personal file from a phone

For a document saved on a phone, use Amazon’s Send to Kindle service. Select the file to upload or use the phone’s share action to send it through Send to Kindle, then choose the Kindle or library destination offered. The exact controls can vary by phone and app version, so use the current share or upload options rather than relying on a fixed tap sequence.

The receiving Kindle needs Wi-Fi access to download the sent document. Amazon lists PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM, HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP, and EPUB as supported Send to Kindle file types; its stated limit is 200 MB per file.

Deliver a book purchased from Amazon

  1. Sign in to the Amazon account used to purchase the book, then open Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. Open the Books section and find the title.
  3. Choose “Deliver or Remove from Device,” select the registered Kindle or Kindles, and choose “Make Changes.”
  4. Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi so it can receive the book.

This is account delivery, not a file-copy operation: you do not need to locate an ebook file on your phone or computer.

Send a file from a computer over Wi-Fi

  1. Open Amazon’s Send to Kindle service.
  2. Select a supported file no larger than 200 MB.
  3. Choose the Kindle or library destination presented, then send the file.
  4. Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi to receive the document.

Send to Kindle’s listed formats are PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM, HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP, and EPUB. This service-specific list and size limit are not a complete guide to every file format that may work when copied over USB.

Copy files from a Windows computer over USB

  1. Connect the Kindle to the computer with a USB cable. Amazon says the device should appear in File Explorer as “Kindle” or “Kindle Scribe.”
  2. Open the Kindle drive and copy the file into its Documents folder.
  3. Eject the Kindle safely before unplugging it, then find the transferred item on the device.

If Windows does not recognize the Kindle, unplug and reconnect the cable. Amazon’s Windows USB guidance also warns that a transfer can fail if the full file path exceeds 256 characters; use a shorter folder path or filename if needed.

Copy files from a Mac over USB

Older Kindle models

Amazon says older Mac computers and Kindle models released before 2024, except Kindle Scribe, do not require a separate application for USB transfer. Connect the Kindle, open it in the Mac’s file manager, and copy the file into the Documents folder.

Kindle Scribe and Kindle models released in 2024

For Kindle Scribe and Kindle models released in 2024, Amazon requires a separate application for USB file management on Mac. Its Send to Kindle Mac app includes a USB File Manager and, according to Amazon’s cited guidance, supports Intel and M1–M3 Macs running macOS 12 or later.

Transfer a file from a USB flash drive

Amazon’s cited transfer guidance explains how to connect a Kindle to a computer and copy files from that computer. It does not document inserting a USB flash drive into a Kindle as an import method. To use a file stored on a flash drive, copy it to a computer first; then send it with Send to Kindle or follow the computer-to-Kindle USB steps for your operating system.

EPUB, Kindle Store books, and DRM

Amazon lists EPUB among the formats supported by Send to Kindle. That does not mean every EPUB can be transferred: the file still needs to meet the service’s requirements, including the per-file size limit.

Do not assume a Kindle Store purchase can be exported and copied as an ordinary ebook file. Amazon’s DRM guidance says DRM-applied books are restricted to Kindle apps and devices. Amazon describes EPUB or PDF downloads only for eligible DRM-free purchases under its rules; that conditional option is not permission or technical support to bypass DRM. If you cannot transfer a file, obtain a compatible copy from its legitimate source or check Amazon’s current help guidance.
