The right way to transfer apps, photos, and messages depends on whether you’re moving between iPhones, between Android phones, or switching platforms. Start the copy process from the new phone’s setup when possible, then check the items that often need extra attention: app data, photo libraries, chat history, files, and phone service. No transfer method guarantees an identical copy of every app and its private data.
Before you start
Identify the old and new phone platforms first. Setup-time tools differ by transfer direction, and some are harder—or impossible—to use after setup is complete.
- Charge both phones and have the old phone’s unlock code and account passwords ready.
- Connect to Wi-Fi where the instructions require it, and sign in to the account you intend to use on the new phone.
- Check available storage on the new phone, especially if you have a large photo or video library.
- Check both phones’ ports before choosing a cable; some combinations require an adapter. Wired transfer is available for several routes, but compatibility varies by device.
- Keep the old phone until you have checked the new one. Confirm important content before erasing, trading in, or recycling it.
Choose the transfer for your phone combination

| iPhone → iPhone | Apple Quick Start during setup, or restore an iCloud or computer backup | Quick Start is unavailable from a current device when the new iPhone is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business. Apple Quick Start guidance. |
| Android → Android | Choose to copy data from the old phone during new Android setup | Some downloads, hidden-folder media, non-Play apps, and data from apps that do not use Android backup may not copy. Google Android transfer guidance. |
| Android → iPhone | Choose “From Android” during iPhone setup and follow Move to iOS | If iPhone setup is complete, Apple says you must erase it and start again to use Move to iOS, or move content manually. Apple Move to iOS guidance. |
| iPhone → Android | Choose iPhone or iPad as the source during Android setup | The exact method and supported content depend on the Android model and software. iMessage and iCloud Photos may need separate attention. Google guidance for switching to Android. |
Transfer between iPhones
Use Quick Start
- Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the current iPhone. Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on the current phone.
- Follow the on-screen Quick Start instructions and choose either to download from iCloud or transfer directly from the previous iPhone.
- Keep both phones near each other and connected to power until the transfer is done. With a direct transfer, wait for completion before using either phone normally.
An iCloud download lets apps and data continue downloading in the background, so the new iPhone can be used sooner. A direct transfer keeps the migration on the two devices. Apple says completion time varies with network conditions and the amount of data; there is no universal time estimate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRestore a backup instead
You can also restore the new iPhone from an iCloud backup or a computer backup. Depending on your computer and software, use Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Follow Apple’s iPhone setup and transfer instructions for the applicable restore route.

Transfer between Android phones
During setup on the new Android phone, choose the option to copy data from the old phone and follow the prompts. Google documents both cable and wireless transfer for the general Android setup path; the supported data is the same in that path. Steps can vary by phone manufacturer and Android version, and work- or school-managed devices may restrict copying.
Google lists apps and some app data, music, photos, videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages and multimedia in texts, many settings, wallpaper, and call history among content that can transfer. A Google Account can make the transfer more complete, but it does not guarantee that every app’s data will move.
Downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, some settings, data from apps that do not use Android backup, and data tied to non-Google accounts may not copy. See Google’s Android transfer steps and content list for details.

Move from Android to iPhone
Use Apple’s Move to iOS while setting up the iPhone. On the iPhone, select From Android, then follow the prompts in Move to iOS on the Android phone. Apple and Google describe a wireless option and a USB-C cable connection; Google describes the cable as more reliable. Use a cable only if it works with both devices, adding an adapter if necessary.
The transfer can include supported contacts, messages, photos, videos, calendars, and other selected data. Some free apps may be matched only if they’re available in both stores and supported by the transfer feature; you may need to install apps from the App Store. Music, books, and PDFs may need to be moved manually.
If you have already completed iPhone setup, Apple says you must erase the iPhone and start setup again to use Move to iOS. If you do not want to erase it, move content manually instead. Review Apple’s Move to iOS instructions and Google’s switching guidance for the current prompts and supported options.

Move from iPhone to Android
Start during setup on the new Android phone. Choose iPhone or iPad as the source when prompted, then follow the instructions shown on screen. Depending on the Android model and connection, pairing may use a QR code, a cable, or a wireless flow. You may be asked to sign in to a Google Account to bring over content associated with it.

After setup, check photos, videos, and texts rather than assuming everything arrived. If you use iMessage, turn it off on your Apple devices so messages can reach the Android phone as ordinary texts. Some group conversations may need to be restarted. If your photos are in iCloud, a separate transfer to Google Photos may be needed. The exact supported data and route vary by Android model and software; see Google’s Android switching instructions.

Apps and app data
Think of apps as a reinstall-and-verify task, not a guaranteed clone. On a platform switch, the destination store may not have the same app, and paid apps do not necessarily transfer as purchases between platforms. Availability can also vary by region. An app’s private data may require its own account, sync service, backup, or export; sign in and check the app itself after migration.

Photos and videos
Check that the new phone has enough free storage. If your pictures already sync through a cloud service, signing in may be enough; copying the same library again can create unnecessary duplicate work. Google’s transfer troubleshooting guidance suggests backing photos up and omitting them from a restore in some cases. If storage is tight, transfer fewer categories and handle a large photo library separately.
Messages and chat apps
Check SMS/MMS separately from chat apps such as WhatsApp. Follow the chat app’s own backup or transfer prompts; its history may require extra steps, and setting up the new app too early can complicate restoration. When switching from iPhone to Android, check iMessage on all Apple devices and confirm that the new phone’s SIM or eSIM is active.
Files, downloads, and accounts
Downloads, hidden-folder media, PDFs, books, music, and documents may need manual copying or a cloud service. Know the passwords for important accounts: signing in can restore synced content, but a phone transfer does not necessarily move saved credentials or app sessions in the same way.

SIM and eSIM service
Moving data and activating phone service are separate tasks. Whether a number transfers during setup depends on the carrier and device support. Follow the carrier instructions shown on the phone rather than assuming the data copy also activates the SIM or eSIM.
If the transfer gets stuck or something is missing
- The copy stops: Charge both phones and reconnect them. If a cable is not recognized, unplug and reconnect both ends, check the ports, and try a known-compatible cable or adapter. Use wireless transfer if that route is available for your devices.
- Wireless pairing fails: Follow the prompts for the specific phone model; wireless options and steps vary. Recheck Wi-Fi and keep the phones close together.
- Setup is already complete: Look for the Android phone’s “Finish setting up” or copy-data option. Some routes require returning to initial setup or resetting; do not factory-reset until important data is backed up or verified.
- The new phone runs out of space: Transfer fewer categories or move a large photo library separately through its cloud service.
- An app or chat is missing: Check that app’s own transfer and backup instructions. Some WhatsApp transfers require additional steps, and configuring the new app before restoring may complicate recovery.
- Texts stop arriving after an iPhone-to-Android move: Turn off iMessage on the old Apple devices and confirm SIM/eSIM activation. Some conversations may need to be restarted, and senders may need to address messages to your phone number rather than your Apple ID.
Google’s switching-to-Android troubleshooting guidance covers common transfer issues. Before resetting either phone, make sure the content you need is backed up or accessible elsewhere.
