On a new iPhone or iPad, the simplest way to move data from Android is to choose From Android during setup and follow the prompts in Apple’s Move to iOS app. Keep both devices powered and close together, and leave the app open on Android until the progress bar on the Apple device finishes.
Before you start
- Turn on Wi-Fi on the Android device and connect both devices to power.
- Check that the data you want to move will fit on the iPhone or iPad. Include content stored on an external microSD card in your estimate.
- If you want Chrome bookmarks transferred, update Chrome on Android first.
- If you have a compatible USB-C cable, Apple also supports a direct cable connection and says it can make the transfer faster. The required cable compatibility and speed gain depend on the devices and cable; Apple does not publish a speed figure or a universally compatible cable model.
Move data with Move to iOS during setup
- Start setup on the new iPhone or iPad. Choose to set it up without another Apple device. On the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen, tap From Android, then choose Transfer with App.
- Open Move to iOS on Android. Accept the prompts and permissions the app needs, then enter the code displayed on the Apple device.
- Connect the devices. Follow the prompts to join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the Apple device. If you are using a cable, Android may prompt you to adjust USB settings.
- Select what to transfer. Keep the devices near each other and plugged in while the transfer runs. Leave Move to iOS open on Android; if Android says it is finished first, wait until the Apple device’s loading bar completes.
- Complete setup and verify your content. Finish iOS or iPadOS setup, check that important items arrived, and download any matched apps from the App Store when prompted or needed. Number and SIM/eSIM activation may be part of the move; your carrier may require follow-up.
Transfer time depends on how much content you select. Apple does not give a typical duration, so allow the devices to finish rather than relying on an estimate.
What moves—and what you may need to move yourself
Apple lists contacts, message history and SMS messages, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, accessibility and display settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history, and calendars as transferable content.

Some free apps may be matched if they are available in both Google Play and the App Store and support the transfer feature. You can then download the matched apps from the App Store; this does not mean every Android app or its data will transfer.

Apple says, “Music, books, and PDFs need to be moved over manually.” Plan to transfer those separately.
If you already finished setting up the iPhone or iPad
Apple’s app-based Move to iOS flow is part of initial setup. To use it after setup is complete, you must erase the Apple device and start setup again. If you do not want to erase it, move content manually instead.

Other transfer routes
Use a USB-C cable
During the Move to iOS setup flow, Apple offers an optional direct USB-C connection and says it can be faster than transferring wirelessly. Apple does not quantify the difference or guarantee that any particular cable works with every device, so check that your cable supports data transfer and fits both devices.

Transfer without the app
Apple documents a QR-code transfer workflow during setup for compatible Android 17 or later devices. Availability depends on the Android device and its manufacturer; confirm support with the manufacturer, including eSIM capability if relevant.

Fix a transfer that stalls or leaves content behind
- Keep Move to iOS on screen on Android, and keep both devices powered and close together.
- Turn off cellular data on Android and disable settings or apps that may affect Wi-Fi.
- Forget known Wi-Fi networks on Android, then restart both devices and try again.
- If the Apple device runs out of space or looks full after an incomplete transfer, erase it and retry only after confirming the Android content will fit.
