Apple does not describe a feature that copies every customized setting from an old pair of AirPods to AirPods Pro 3. Set up the new pair, then check its controls and preferences. To connect it to an iPhone, update to iOS 26 or later, open the AirPods case near the phone, and follow the on-screen prompts.
Do AirPods settings transfer to a new pair?
Apple’s guidance is to set newly purchased AirPods up as new. Setup can make the new pair available to supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account, but that does not mean every setting customized on the old pair is copied. After connecting AirPods Pro 3, review the new pair’s options and set the preferences you want again. Apple’s connection instructions and AirPods settings guide describe setup and configurable options.
Depending on the feature and device, settings you may want to check include stem actions, microphone selection, and Automatic Ear Detection. On your iPhone, open Settings and tap the name of your connected AirPods near the top of the screen to review available controls.
How to connect AirPods Pro 3 to an iPhone
- Update the iPhone to iOS 26 or later.
- With AirPods Pro 3 in their case, open the case and hold it near the iPhone.
- When the setup animation appears, tap Connect and follow the prompts.
- Tap Done when setup finishes.
If you’re signed in to iCloud with your Apple Account, setup makes the AirPods available to supported devices signed in to that same account. Apple says AirPods can be associated with one Apple Account for features such as automatic device switching and Find My. See Apple’s connection instructions.

How to pair AirPods Pro 3 manually
If the setup animation does not appear, use the manual pairing method. AirPods Pro 3 uses a front-case gesture; do not follow instructions for older AirPods models that tell you to press a rear setup button.
- Put AirPods Pro 3 in the case and open the lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- On the iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap AirPods Pro 3 in the list of available devices and follow any prompts.

Why aren’t AirPods switching between my Apple devices?
Automatic switching requires supported devices to be up to date, signed in to the same Apple Account, and using two-factor authentication. If those conditions are met but switching is still not behaving as you want, check the connection preference on the device where you want to change it.

- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap the name of your AirPods.
- Tap Connect to This iPhone or Connect to This iPad.
- Choose the preferred connection behavior shown on screen.

What to do if Find My says setup is incomplete
If you see an incomplete-setup alert for Find My, allow time for pairing to finish, then check these requirements:
- Update the iPhone or iPad to the current iOS or iPadOS version available for it.
- Make sure Find My iPhone and the Find My network are enabled.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
If the AirPods were previously used by someone else, that person must remove them from their Apple Account before you can associate them with yours. Follow Apple’s Find My setup guidance; for pairing steps, see Apple’s connection instructions.

If the fit or sound seems wrong after pairing
A poor seal is a fit issue, not a settings-transfer problem. On a connected iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 26 or later, use the Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3 from Settings. Adjust the earbuds and test again; if the seal is still poor, try another included ear-tip size. Apple notes that ears can differ, so you may need different sizes for left and right. Ear tips are model-specific, so use tips designed for AirPods Pro 3 rather than assuming tips from an older Pro model will fit. Apple states that “Ear tips are not interchangeable between models” in its ear-tip instructions.
