To transfer a file over the Internet, upload it to a trusted cloud or file-transfer service, then give the recipient access or share its download link. For ongoing collaboration, use a shared cloud folder; to deliver a finished file, use a one-time transfer link. To upload files to a website or server, connect with SFTP using credentials from the host.
What does transferring a file over the Internet mean?
A file transfer is the movement of digital data from one device or server to another over a network. In a typical person-to-person transfer, you upload a file to an online service, which stores it and lets the recipient download it or work on it with you.
The connection and the sharing permissions are separate concerns. HTTPS uses TLS to protect data as it moves between your device and a server. TLS provides encryption, integrity protection and authentication, but it does not determine who can access a stored file or a share link. MDN explains how TLS protects connections.

Which file-transfer method should you use?
| Method | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud storage share or folder | Persistent access, syncing or collaboration | Permissions, whether recipients need an account, storage quota, link access and collaboration features |
| One-time transfer link | Delivering a finished file for download | Transfer-size limits, expiration or retention, download access and link controls |
| SFTP client and server | Uploading to web hosting or another managed server account | Whether the host supports SFTP, the credentials, destination directory and server permissions |
| HTTPS upload or download page | Browser-based transfer through a service | Service trust, file-size rules, account requirements, recipient controls and retention |
For example, Google Drive describes sharing files through its service, while Dropbox describes Transfer as an option for files that do not need collaboration. Dropbox says recipients can download a Transfer from a shareable link without a Dropbox account; available customization options vary by plan. Check current service terms for limits and features. How to send a file to another person
- Choose a trusted service. Use a cloud-storage service for continued access or joint editing, and a transfer service when you are delivering a finished file.
- Upload the file. Open the service’s website or app, select its upload option, and choose the file. Wait for the upload to finish before sharing it.
- Set access for the intended use. Invite specific people when access should be restricted or collaboration is needed. For a completed file, create a download link if the service offers one.
- Review the link settings. Check who can open the file, whether the link expires, and whether a password or other access control is available. Do not post a sensitive link publicly.
- Send the link through an appropriate channel. Tell the recipient what file to expect. If the material is sensitive, check the provider’s stated encryption protections and whether your account or plan supports the features you need.
Google says Drive data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Its additional client-side encryption requires a Workspace account and administrator enablement; it is not a feature to assume is available on every ordinary account. Google’s client-side encryption requirements.
How to upload files to a website or server
If you are publishing a website or moving files into a hosting account, use the SFTP connection details supplied by your host and an SFTP client. The host’s instructions should identify the server, username, authentication method and destination directory. Follow its process to connect, then transfer the files to the correct remote location. MDN’s guide to uploading files to a web server explains the local and remote file views you will see in an SFTP client.

Do not confuse SFTP with FTP. MDN describes plain FTP as insecure; it can expose credentials or file contents in transit. Use SFTP or another secure method, and confirm that your host supports it. MDN’s FTP definition.
What encryption protects—and what it does not
HTTPS is HTTP secured by TLS. TLS protects the connection between a client and server by encrypting traffic, helping detect changes in transit, and authenticating the parties to the connection. It does not, by itself, mean that a provider cannot access a file after it is stored on its servers, nor does it control who has a valid share link.

Providers describe different protection scopes. Google says Drive files are encrypted in transit and at rest, and says it cannot decrypt files protected with its client-side encryption. Dropbox documents encryption at rest and SSL/TLS in transit, and describes end-to-end encryption as a feature available to users. WeTransfer says files are encrypted in transit using TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 and at rest using AES-256. These are provider statements about their services, not independent security audits of a particular transfer. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before choosing a service
- Size limit: There is no universal maximum; limits depend on the service and plan.
- Recipient access: Find out whether recipients need an account, and whether you can restrict access to named people.
- Retention and expiration: Check how long the file remains available and whether a link can expire.
- Collaboration: Use shared storage if people need to edit or revisit the file; a download link is often more suitable for a completed deliverable.
- Security scope: Distinguish connection encryption from encryption at rest or end-to-end protection, and confirm whether a desired feature is available for your account.
Features and limits can change, so check the service’s current documentation before transferring a large or sensitive file. For example, Dropbox outlines plan-dependent transfer options and link controls on its large-file sharing page.
