You can buy US stocks from Malaysia through a locally available broker, but the lowest headline commission is not necessarily the lowest total cost. Compare brokerage, MYR-to-USD conversion, regulatory and exchange charges, funding and withdrawal fees, and any promotion’s expiry for the exact order you plan to place.
Can Malaysians invest in US stocks?
Bank Negara Malaysia’s Foreign Exchange Policy says, “A resident without domestic ringgit borrowing is free to invest any amount in foreign currency (FC) assets onshore and abroad.” For the stated individual category, a resident with domestic ringgit borrowing is generally subject to a limit of RM1 million equivalent per calendar year when funding foreign-currency assets through ringgit conversion or a Trade Foreign Currency Account. Check the policy and your circumstances before transferring funds: Bank Negara Malaysia’s Foreign Exchange Policy.
This is a foreign-exchange rule, not a statement that every account, security or transaction is suitable for every investor. Broker eligibility and account terms are separate; confirm them with the provider.

Price a complete round trip—buying and later selling—rather than comparing commission headlines alone. The actual charges depend on the broker, instrument, order and funding route.
#1 Best Overall
- Brokerage: Check the percentage rate and any per-order minimum or maximum. A minimum can dominate the cost of a small order.
- Currency conversion: Find the actual MYR/USD rate or spread you will receive, and whether you can convert MYR to USD yourself or let the platform convert. A small spread can outweigh a zero-commission offer.
- Market and instrument charges: Ask about regulatory, exchange, clearing and other pass-through costs. ADRs may also involve depositary-receipt, conversion, custodian, tax and trading-commission charges.
- Funding and withdrawal: Include bank transfer, intermediary-bank, withdrawal and currency-conversion costs where applicable.
- Order handling and access: Check whether same-day orders are combined for billing, whether fractional shares are available for the security you want, and whether the minimum order size fits your plan.
- Promotion terms: Establish the start and end dates, eligible instruments, and charges that remain payable during a commission-free period.
For ADRs, Rakuten Trade’s FAQ discusses a 15% withholding tax on dividends in its ADR-tax section. That statement should not be generalized to every US-listed security or every investor: verify the treatment of the exact security and your tax status with the broker or a qualified tax adviser. How the available broker fee information compares
The published figures below are not a synchronized all-in-cost comparison. In particular, the cited pages do not establish comparable FX spreads for a Malaysian investor’s actual funding route. Treat promotions as time-limited and verify current terms before opening or funding an account.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.

The brokers’ published information does not establish one cheapest choice for every Malaysian investor. In addition to the figures above, compare account terms and local licensing disclosures against your own priorities; the presence of a licence or protection scheme is not a guarantee against investment losses.
Calculate the cost for your own order
Use a realistic order amount, the payment route you would actually use and the same security across brokers. For example, Rakuten Trade’s 2025 schedule makes the brokerage on a US trade worth USD500 the greater of 0.10% of the trade value or USD0.88—USD0.88, before other charges. The order’s true cost is higher if applicable conversion, stamp, exchange, regulatory, funding or withdrawal charges apply. At a different order size, the percentage rate or USD25 cap could affect the brokerage calculation.

For each provider, write down the cost of converting the amount you will invest, the brokerage for the buy and eventual sale, any pass-through charges, and the cost to move money in and out. Use the broker’s quoted conversion rate rather than assuming a displayed commission tells you the total. If a charge or rate is not disclosed clearly, ask the broker for the applicable figure before placing the order.

Small orders and minimum brokerage
A minimum commission can make frequent small purchases comparatively expensive. Rakuten Trade’s published minimum is USD0.88 per transaction; calculate its effect on your expected order size, then include FX and other fees. A zero-commission promotion may reduce brokerage temporarily, but it does not by itself settle the FX or other-cost comparison.

Same-day order amalgamation
Rakuten Trade says same-day US buy orders in the same stock and settlement currency may be amalgamated at day end. Its FAQ gives an example where two USD0.88 brokerage charges become one USD0.88 charge after amalgamation. This may reduce repeated minimum brokerage for qualifying orders, but check the broker’s conditions and do not assume separate orders will always be combined.
Fractional shares and low-priced stocks
Moomoo advertises US-stock investing from one share; Rakuten Trade says fractional-share eligibility changes by quarter. Verify whether fractional trading is available for the particular stock and whether it changes execution or fees. Rakuten Trade also says US stocks priced below USD1 carry a 1% surcharge on monthly trading value, effective 1 August 2023. That is a specific schedule rule, not a general charge for all US stocks.

- Easy to read text
- It can be a gift option
A practical low-fee process
- Check your position under the foreign-exchange policy. Review Bank Negara Malaysia’s rule for your resident and domestic ringgit-borrowing status before funding foreign-currency assets.
- Shortlist providers that serve Malaysian residents. Review the local entity, Securities Commission Malaysia licensing disclosures and any stated investor-protection terms directly on the provider’s official page.
- Choose a realistic trade. Record the security, expected MYR funding amount, order value, settlement currency and whether you intend to buy in one order or several.
- Request the full price for your route. Compare brokerage minimums and caps, the MYR/USD rate or spread, regulatory and market charges, ADR-specific charges where relevant, plus funding and withdrawal costs.
- Apply only features that actually fit. Check if your orders qualify for amalgamation, whether fractional trading is available for the security, and whether your expected order size makes a minimum fee material.
- Read the promotion’s exclusions and dates. Treat “zero commission” as a limited offer unless the current schedule says otherwise; identify the end date and costs that remain.
- Recheck before a material transfer or trade. Promotions, FX rates and fee schedules can change, so use the current applicable terms rather than an old comparison.
What to verify before choosing
- The commission and minimum/maximum for the exact US instrument.
- The executable MYR/USD conversion rate and whether the account can hold USD.
- Which exchange, regulatory, clearing, stamp or instrument-specific fees apply.
- Whether a stated commission offer has expired or excludes your trade.
- How the broker handles same-day orders and fractional shares.
- Funding, withdrawal and currency-transfer charges.
- The Malaysian entity, licence disclosures and conditions for any stated investor-protection scheme.
