To get the best value for your old phone, compare current offers for its exact model and condition, then weigh the kind of credit and the terms—not just the biggest advertised number. Treat an online quote as an estimate until the provider confirms the phone’s condition, and check the specific offer’s deadline before you send it.
What “best value” means for a phone trade-in
A trade-in offer is only comparable when you know what you will actually receive and what you must do to qualify. Depending on the program, value may be purchase credit, a gift card, or promotional bill credits tied to a particular purchase or service. Apple’s U.S. program offers credit toward a purchase or an Apple Gift Card; Best Buy describes gift-card and purchase-credit options. The credit type and restrictions matter as much as the headline estimate.
There is no universal best offer: the amount depends on the device and its condition, and programs can differ in eligibility and terms. Best Buy says its offer can factor in the phone’s age, condition, required accessories, and current resale prices. If the quote is disappointing, that is a reason to compare another trade-in route or a sale option; it does not establish that any particular alternative will pay more.

- Identify the phone precisely. Record the model, storage capacity, carrier status, and condition. Note display damage, whether the phone powers on, and whether accounts or activation locks have been removed. Do not describe damage as absent just to obtain a higher estimate.
- Get quotes for the same phone. Check the intended new-phone seller and other plausible trade-in routes. Save the quote date and whether the amount is an online estimate or a final in-person offer. Offers and accepted models can change.
- Compare the payout and conditions. Record whether the value is immediate purchase credit, a gift card, later credit, or promotional bill credits. Read the order’s eligibility, service, installment, and return terms; do not treat promotional credits as cash paid up front.
- Check the return deadline and delivery method. Confirm when the provider must receive or be shipped the phone, and follow the instructions for that transaction. A deadline in standard program terms may differ from the deadline attached to a promotion.
- Choose based on net value and effort. Compare the usable credit you expect to receive with its restrictions, the condition risk, and the work required. A higher estimate may not be the better choice if its terms do not fit your purchase or you cannot meet its deadline.
Understand estimates, inspections, and deadlines
An online quote is based on the information you provide. A later inspection can change the amount if the phone’s actual condition does not match that description. Apple says an in-store evaluation may result in different credit when the device condition differs from the online description. Samsung’s U.S. terms allow a condition charge or adjustment when program requirements are not met. Report the phone honestly and keep a record of what you submitted.

Deadlines also depend on the provider and transaction. On Apple’s cited U.S. page, the phone must be received within 14 days after the new device arrives for the described offer. Samsung Electronics America’s standard U.S. terms say to ship within 15 days after receipt unless a promotion specifies another period. These are program-specific examples, not universal deadlines; check the actual order because promotion terms can replace general terms.
Prepare the phone before handing it over
- Back up and transfer what you want to keep. Verify that important photos, messages, contacts, and files are available on your replacement phone or backup.
- Remove accounts and activation locks. Sign out of personal accounts and turn off device-finding or activation-lock features as the manufacturer and trade-in provider instruct. A locked device may fail the provider’s requirements.
- Erase the phone. Follow the provider’s and manufacturer’s instructions for a factory reset after confirming the backup. Samsung’s U.S. terms state: “You must remove all data, including all confidential and personal data, from your Trade-In Device before returning it to Samsung.” Samsung also says it assumes no responsibility for personal information left on the device.
- Remove removable cards. Take out the SIM and any memory card. Do not include accessories unless the provider specifically requests them.
- Document condition and shipment. Photograph the phone’s condition before packing or handoff, retain the quote, and keep the shipment or handoff receipt. Use the provider’s exact packing and return instructions.
What to do if the final value changes
When the provider reports a revised valuation, compare its reason with the condition description and photos you saved. If there is a mismatch, promptly use that provider’s stated review or dispute process and include the quote, condition records, and shipping or handoff proof. Check the transaction status afterward to confirm the final credit was applied as described.

How much is my phone worth?
There is no reliable universal amount. Request a current quote using the exact model, storage, carrier status, and condition, then verify whether the amount is an estimate and what form the credit takes. Accepted models, promotions, and quoted values can change.

Can I trade in a phone with a cracked screen?
Eligibility and value depend on the provider and the particular offer; the cited program information does not establish a universal rule for cracked screens. Disclose the damage in the quote tool and check the provider’s requirements before committing. A later inspection may reduce or change the offer if the reported condition is inaccurate.
