In the U.S., Amazon lists Kindle e-readers and tablets as Trade-In categories. To see whether your particular device qualifies, search Amazon’s live Trade-In storefront for its exact model and answer the condition questions. Accepted trade-ins receive an Amazon.com gift card; a separate discount toward a new qualifying Amazon device may be available, but it is not guaranteed for every Kindle or account. Confirm any offer in the terms and at checkout before counting on it.
What you may receive—and what is not guaranteed
Amazon’s Trade-In program provides an Amazon.com gift card for an accepted device. Some eligible items may also qualify for a limited-time promotional discount or rebate toward a qualifying new Amazon device. These are separate benefits: a device may qualify for a gift card without a promotion, and a promotion is not automatically available for every new Kindle. Check the current Amazon Trade-In overview and Trade-In Terms and Conditions, then make sure the applicable benefit appears in your order at checkout.
Amazon’s overview describes promotions of up to 20% and limits the discount to one per customer account, per device category, per calendar quarter. Those are program terms, not a promise of a current Kindle offer. The offer shown for your device, account, and new-device order is the one to rely on.

How to trade in your device
-
Find the exact model in Amazon Trade-In
Search the live storefront for the make, model, and version of your old Kindle or tablet. Select the matching item and answer the condition questions accurately. Kindle e-readers and tablets appear as categories in Amazon’s overview, but not every model is necessarily listed or eligible at a given time. The displayed estimate can depend on model, make, and condition, and Amazon may revise its assessment after inspection.

Check the offer at checkout
Read the terms for any promotion and check the order summary for the new qualifying device. Do not assume a displayed gift-card value also includes a discount. Amazon’s terms allow promotional benefits to be adjusted or charged back in circumstances such as cancellation, missing a deadline, or submitting a rejected or mismatched device.
-
Back up, erase, and remove account access
Save anything you want to keep, then factory-reset the device. Remove personal data yourself; Amazon says that responsibility belongs to the customer. Deregister or unlock the device from relevant accounts where applicable. Amazon’s trade-in preparation instructions and electronics recycling guidance provide additional device-handling information.

Check that the device matches the listing and works
Amazon’s Electronics Condition Criteria require the submitted item to match the selected product and version. The device must belong to you rather than be financed through a third party, and it must be unlocked or deregistered where applicable. It must power on, hold a charge, connect to Wi-Fi, and have working features. Amazon also says: “The device must power on, hold a charge, and not power off unexpectedly.” Required accessories may matter for some listings. A mismatch, defect, or inaccurate condition answer can result in a lower value or rejection.

Send or drop off the device by the order’s deadline
Use the shipping or drop-off method and deadline shown for your trade-in. Amazon’s preparation page describes UPS shipping and participating-location drop-off for Amazon devices. It says eligible items other than phones have 45 days from creation of the trade-in to ship; follow the specific deadline and instructions in your account.

Trade-in, recycling, or keeping the device
| Option | What you get | Eligibility and logistics |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Trade-In | An Amazon.com gift card if the device is accepted; a separate qualifying-device promotion may be available under current terms. | The exact model must be listed and meet condition criteria. Follow the order’s shipping or drop-off instructions and deadline. |
| Amazon recycling | Device recycling, not trade-in payment. | Amazon describes mail-back recycling with shipping and recycling costs covered, plus drop-off options that depend on location. Check local availability and device acceptance on the recycling page. |
| Keep or sell privately | Depends on your choice and any offer you arrange. | Compare actual offers, fees, effort, and local options; there is no universal financial advantage established here. |
Whichever route you choose, back up and remove personal data before giving up the device. If Amazon does not list your model or it does not meet trade-in criteria, recycling may be an alternative, subject to the program’s local availability.
