The simplest way to track your pace during a golf round is to note your tee-off time, then check elapsed time at the turn, any course-posted checkpoints, and the finish. A watch or phone timer and your scorecard are enough. Compare your times with the course’s own pace target; there is no single round-time benchmark that applies to every course and playing condition.

Set up a simple pace log before you tee off

  1. Check the course’s target. Look for a pace policy, a pace clock, or target times printed on the scorecard. Targets may be given for the full round, individual holes, or intermediate checkpoints. If the course has a target that is not printed on your card, write it down.
  2. Choose a timekeeping method. Start an elapsed timer on your watch or phone when your group tees off, or record the clock time instead. Use the scorecard to note your start and checkpoint times. A consumer timer is a practical option, not a device required by golf rules or course policy.
  3. Keep the log unobtrusive. Record a time when you reach a natural pause, such as the turn. Don’t stop play or handle your phone while walking, driving a cart, or preparing to hit.

Check your time at useful points in the round

At the turn, at any published intermediate checkpoint, and at the finish, compare your elapsed time with the course’s target for that point. If you are behind, make a brief note and keep playing; detailed calculations can wait until a natural pause or after the round.

A checkpoint log can help you notice where time accumulated—for example, during a long search, repeated trips back to the cart, or delays getting ready for a shot. The USGA describes facility-level pace analysis using group and hole times, gaps between groups, and bottlenecks. Using a personal log to identify your own slow stretches is a practical application of that idea, not a personal tracking system prescribed by the USGA.

If the course does not publish a target, comparing your own checkpoint times across rounds can still show whether a round took longer than usual on that course. Without a formal target, though, your log cannot establish that you were behind a course pace policy.

Keep pace without rushing your swing

The USGA’s Tips and Suggestions for Improving Pace of Play says, “Playing at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course.” Its guidance is to prepare before your turn, move promptly between shots and toward the next tee, and aim to play in 20 seconds when it is your turn. That 20-second recommendation concerns the time from club selection through routine and execution; it is not a target for an entire hole or round.

Ready golf can help in stroke play when it is safe and responsible. The USGA’s rules modernization explainer advises players to recognize how their pace affects others, prepare in advance, and move between strokes and toward the next tee. Do not take an unsafe shortcut or hit when another player could be in danger.

Use the course’s policy as your reference

Pace targets vary by course and competition. The 2024 USGA Amateur Championships pace-of-play policy shows one competition approach: target times are provided in per-hole and aggregate formats on player scorecards in stroke play, while players in match play are directed to ask a referee. These formats illustrate how an event can communicate its expectations; they are not universal standards for recreational rounds.

In competition, follow the event’s posted policy and instructions. USGA rules education for golfers describes officials checking group positions at checkpoints. Your own timer helps you understand your elapsed time, but it does not replace an official’s position checks or the event’s pace procedures.

Do golf apps, GPS devices, or watches track pace?

Do not assume that a golf app, GPS watch, rangefinder, or cart display tracks your individual pace. GPS and rangefinders can help with distance decisions when permitted by the applicable Local Rule, but they do not measure elapsed round time simply by providing yardages.

The current GHIN app listing describes score posting, hole-by-hole scoring and statistics, course maps and GPS, enhanced GPS functions such as shot tracking, group scorekeeping, and Apple Watch integration. The listing does not claim an individual pace-of-play timer. USGA support documentation for enhanced GPS explains GPS functions and shot-tracking setup, but likewise does not establish that GHIN automatically measures an individual golfer’s pace. Features and availability can change, so check the current listing before relying on a particular function.

What to bring for manual tracking

You do not need a paid GPS watch or a specialized app to keep a basic log. A watch or phone timer and a scorecard will do. If you prefer to keep your notes by hand, a golf scorecard notebook is an optional way to record start, turn, and finish times. Check the product listing before buying one; do not assume it has dedicated pace fields. Scorecards vary, although some competition cards publish target times.
