Track the yen with the Bank of Japan’s exchange-rate data, Japanese government bond (JGB) yields with the Ministry of Finance’s curve-based rates, and Bitcoin risk by separating price movement, volatility, and the product or venue you use. These are different kinds of indicators, published on different schedules; they do not combine into a single risk score or reliably predict one another.
Which official sources should you use?
| Indicator | Useful source | What it represents | Key timing or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yen versus the U.S. dollar | BOJ Foreign Exchange Rates (Daily) and the BOJ Time-Series Data Search | A bilateral USD/JPY exchange rate. In the time-series data, 9:00 and 17:00 JST spot observations are bid-offer mid rates. | Exchange rates move throughout the day. Label the date and observation time; BOJ daily releases can be revised or corrected. |
| Yen against a broader currency basket | BOJ Notes on Statistics: Financial Markets | The BOJ Yen Index, a nominal effective exchange-rate measure using trade weights. | It is not the same measure as USD/JPY. The methodology is basically based on the BIS effective-exchange-rate methodology, and trade weights are recalculated every three years. |
| Japanese government bond yields | Japan MOF Interest Rate (Q & A) and its related yield data | Constant-maturity points derived from the JGB yield curve, rather than yields for one specific bond. | Rates use secondary-market prices at the 3 p.m. close and are published at 9:30 a.m. the next business day. |
| Bitcoin market conditions | A Bitcoin price and volatility feed, with the instrument identified as spot, a futures-based fund, or a margined futures position | Price direction and volatility describe market behavior; they do not, on their own, show an investor’s leverage, custody arrangements, or product mechanics. | Spot, futures, funds, and trading platforms can have materially different risks. A price series is not a complete risk assessment. |
How to tell whether the yen is strengthening
Read USD/JPY in the correct direction
USD/JPY states how many yen are needed to buy one U.S. dollar. If the quoted number rises, the dollar buys more yen and the yen has weakened against the dollar. If it falls, the yen has strengthened against the dollar. That conclusion applies only to the yen-dollar pair, not to the yen’s performance against all trading partners.
Choose the observation time and broader measure
The BOJ says its daily foreign-exchange releases have been published each business day since January 4, 2007. For longer history, use its time-series search; its 9:00 and 17:00 JST USD/JPY spot series are bid-offer mid rates. Record the observation’s date and time rather than treating a daily value as a live quote. The BOJ notes that times are JST unless otherwise stated, and that exchange-rate statistics can differ in reference time and compilation method.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo assess yen performance across currencies, consult the BOJ Yen Index, its nominal effective exchange rate. It provides a trade-weighted perspective, not another way of quoting USD/JPY. Its methodology is basically based on the BIS effective-exchange-rate methodology, and the BOJ recalculates trade weights every three years.

How to track Japanese bond yields
Read the maturity point and the publication date
The MOF’s JGB constant-maturity rates are semiannual-compound reference rates calculated from prevailing prices of fixed-income JGBs in the secondary market at the 3 p.m. close. They are published at 9:30 a.m. on the next business day. A constant-maturity yield is a point on the yield curve for a chosen remaining maturity; it is not necessarily the yield on one particular bond. The MOF derives rates from a curve formed using selected JGBs on a grid.
When you follow a yield, name the maturity you mean—for example, a short-, intermediate-, or long-term point. If comparing multiple maturities, check both the general level and the curve’s shape: yields across maturities can move by different amounts. Keep the observation date distinct from the publication date, especially when comparing the figure with markets that trade continuously.

Use market-function data for context
A yield level does not explain how smoothly bonds are trading. The BOJ’s Bond Market Survey covers market functioning and the outlook for long-term rates. It is conducted quarterly—in February, May, August, and November—with results normally released on the first business day of the following month. The BOJ also publishes JGB liquidity indicators.

How to assess Bitcoin market risk
Separate price direction from volatility
A rising or falling Bitcoin price tells you direction over the period you selected, not the full level or type of risk. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy and the CFTC Office of Customer Education and Outreach say in staff investor guidance that “Bitcoin, including gaining exposure through the Bitcoin futures market, is a highly speculative investment.” Their alert also warns of volatility, potential loss, and possible fraud or manipulation in the underlying spot market.
When you monitor Bitcoin, state the observation period and whether you are looking at spot prices or a futures-linked product. Volatility describes the size of price movements over a specified period; it does not establish whether a move will continue or predict a loss threshold.

Identify the exposure behind the price
Direct spot exposure, a Bitcoin-futures fund, and a margined futures position do not behave identically. Futures prices can differ by delivery month, and futures-based funds periodically roll positions, so a fund’s results may differ from spot Bitcoin’s price movement. A market price feed cannot tell you how a particular fund rolls contracts, whether your position is leveraged, or what custody and platform protections apply.

It also explains that leverage in margined futures amplifies the effect of a cash-market move: “Profits and losses related to this volatility are amplified in margined futures contracts.” These are risks to evaluate for the relevant product and venue, not details that can be inferred from Bitcoin’s price alone.

How to compare the indicators without mixing them up
Keep a simple record for every observation. This makes it easier to distinguish a market move from a difference in timing or measurement.
- Name the series: write USD/JPY, the BOJ Yen Index, a specific MOF JGB maturity, or a Bitcoin price or volatility measure.
- Record the observation date and time zone: use JST for BOJ FX observations where applicable, and distinguish the MOF JGB close from its next-business-day publication.
- Specify the unit or maturity: preserve the exchange-rate quote direction, identify the JGB curve point, and state the period used for any Bitcoin volatility measure.
- Identify the exposure: for Bitcoin, record whether the figure concerns spot, a futures-based fund, or a margined futures position.
- Write down what the observation cannot show: USD/JPY is not broad yen performance, a constant-maturity yield is curve-derived rather than one bond’s yield, and a Bitcoin price feed does not capture every market, platform, or product risk.
These series are not synchronous: FX and Bitcoin trade on schedules different from the MOF JGB series, which is published the next business day. Compare dates and timestamps before interpreting apparent co-movement. The official sources establish how these indicators are measured and describe Bitcoin-related risks; they do not establish a reliable causal rule linking yen moves, bond yields, and Bitcoin, or a single threshold that predicts losses.
