Google Sheets can track work time with a simple log of dates, start and end times, projects, and calculated durations. Format accumulated totals as elapsed hours so they remain readable beyond 24 hours. If work is already recorded in Google Calendar, Google also provides an Apps Script sample that imports events into a categorized timesheet dashboard.
Choose a time-tracking method
| Method | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual spreadsheet log | People who want a flexible record and are willing to enter time themselves | Simple to adapt, but entries can be missed or delayed |
| Calendar-to-Sheets automation | People whose work sessions are already represented accurately in Google Calendar | Reduces manual transfer, but requires configuration and script permissions; calendar events may not match actual billable time |
| Prebuilt template | People who would rather adapt an existing workbook than design one | Provides a starting structure, but may not match your pay period, categories, or reporting needs |
Google Sheets supports date and time arithmetic because it stores date and time values as numbers. Its number-format settings include an elapsed-hours format, useful for accumulated durations over 24 hours. See Google’s number-format guide for format and locale details.
Build a basic time log
Set up the columns
Create a sheet with columns for Date, Start time, End time, Project or task, and Duration. Add any categories you actually need for reviewing or reporting work, such as client or team. Keep the date with each time entry so the record is unambiguous.
Calculate and format duration
Enter date and time values as spreadsheet values, not as labels or notes, so Sheets can perform arithmetic on them. A duration is the difference between the end and start values; use the date with the times when a shift might cross midnight. Select the duration cells and apply an elapsed-hours number format such as [h]:mm. The bracketed hours display accumulated hours rather than resetting the hour display after 24 hours. Google documents the format behavior, but exact menu labels and displayed date formats can vary with spreadsheet locale.

Check that a short sample entry displays as the expected duration and that a total exceeding one day continues accumulating hours. If the display looks like a time of day or resets after 24 hours, revisit the cell format rather than treating the value as a text string.
Import Calendar events with Google’s Apps Script sample
Google’s Calendar-to-Sheets timesheet sample imports selected Calendar events into a spreadsheet. It supports categorizing entries by customer, project, and task, then presenting totals in a dashboard. The sample can also be configured to update Calendar event titles and descriptions from the sheet.

Start from a template instead
Smartsheet lists Google Sheets timesheet and time-card templates, including a daily shift template with start and finish times. Before adapting one, check whether its columns, categories, and pay-period logic fit your workflow. A template’s existence does not establish that it meets your payroll, tax, or legal requirements.

Customize the workflow carefully
When a basic log or sample needs additional behavior, Google Sheets can be extended with add-ons and Apps Script. Google documents custom menus, sidebars, functions, external connections, macros, and triggers as extension options in its Apps Script documentation for Sheets and trigger guide. Choose an extension based on a specific need, and check the current documentation for the particular add-on before relying on its capabilities.

Edits can cause formulas that depend on changed cells to recalculate. Google recommends using volatile functions such as TODAY, NOW, and RAND sparingly. For a larger workbook, avoid scattering volatile formulas across many dependent rows when a fixed date or a simpler calculation will meet the need. See Google’s guidance on Sheets calculation settings.
