To receive Polymarket market updates without repeatedly requesting snapshots, connect to its public CLOB market WebSocket and subscribe to the outcome token IDs you want to watch. The feed sends an initial order-book snapshot and subsequent changes; your client should maintain per-token state and send a text PING every 10 seconds to keep the connection alive.
Choose the public market feed for prices and order-book updates
Polymarket’s public market channel is the CLOB market WebSocket at wss://ws-subscriptions-clob.polymarket.com/ws/market. It is described as unauthenticated and subscribes by asset ID, meaning the outcome token ID—not the market’s condition ID. This is the channel for a read-only monitor of public books and trades.
The separate user channel is for authenticated, account-specific order and trade lifecycle events. It requires API credentials and subscribes by condition IDs. Do not use it for a public price monitor unless you also need private account activity.

Connect and subscribe to outcome tokens
Open the WebSocket, then send the subscription as soon as the connection is established. Replace the example values with the asset IDs for the outcomes you want to track; retain the documented assets_ids field name.

Keep a local book from snapshots and changes
Do not treat every received message as a complete replacement for the book. The feed distinguishes a book snapshot from price_change increments. Maintain state per asset: initialize it from the snapshot, then apply each relevant change to the correct side and price level.

book: bid and ask arrays, plus a hash and timestamp. Use this as the subscribed asset’s book snapshot.price_change: aprice_changesarray with price, size, side, best bid, and best ask fields. Apply each update to the matching asset and level. A size of"0"means remove that price level.
This snapshot-plus-increment approach is an implementation pattern based on the documented event types; the protocol guide does not prescribe a full client architecture. If you only display the latest event, the display may not represent the current complete order book.

Send the heartbeat and process incoming messages
Send the literal text PING every 10 seconds on the market channel. The documented response is PONG. Handle that response before attempting to parse incoming messages as JSON, since it is not a JSON event.

- Open the WebSocket connection to the market endpoint.
- Immediately after it opens, send the JSON market subscription with the intended outcome token IDs.
- Every 10 seconds, send the text
PING; recognize the textPONGresponse separately from JSON messages. - For each JSON event, route it by event type and asset, initialize or update the per-asset book, and surface trade or market-status events as appropriate.
Troubleshoot a quiet or disconnecting feed
- Connection drops after roughly 10 seconds: verify that the client sends the text heartbeat every 10 seconds and handles
PONG. - No market messages arrive: confirm the subscription was sent immediately after the socket opened, check that each value is an outcome asset ID, and verify that the market is active.
- The displayed book looks incomplete: confirm that the client processes the initial
booksnapshot and then appliesprice_changeupdates, including removing levels whose size is"0".
The Polymarket-maintained protocol guide documents the endpoint, subscription fields, event types, and heartbeat behavior. API details may change, so check the current guide before relying on the schema or heartbeat rules: Polymarket WebSocket guide.
