Track each company on the same repeatable scorecard: revenue and growth, profitability, demand indicators, cash generation, delivery capacity, and management guidance. Record the fiscal period, publication date, currency, accounting basis, metric definition, and source alongside every number. Compare a company with its own prior quarter and prior-year quarter first; compare companies only after aligning periods and definitions.

How do I track IT services companies’ quarterly results?

Use a spreadsheet or database with one row per company and fiscal quarter, then add a separate field for each metric and its basis. Keep reported results distinct from company-defined adjustments, and preserve the issuer’s wording for metrics that do not have a consistent industry-wide definition.

  1. Identify the reporting period. Record the quarter-end date, the company’s fiscal-quarter label, and the date the results were published. Fiscal calendars differ, so a company’s “Q4” may not cover the same months as another company’s Q4.
  2. Record the basis of the figures. Note reporting currency and accounting basis, such as IFRS or U.S. GAAP. Link to the earnings release, financial statements, and any reconciliation or presentation that explains company-defined measures.
  3. Enter operating and financial metrics. Capture revenue and growth, margins and earnings, bookings or backlog where reported, cash flow, and delivery or workforce data. Include the issuer’s definition and period for each metric.
  4. Capture guidance and commentary separately. Record the forward-looking figure, its assumptions, and the reason management gave for any change. Attribute commentary to the speaker and date; do not treat a forecast or management assessment as an achieved result.
  5. Update the prior-quarter and prior-year comparisons. Keep sequential and year-over-year changes distinct. Preserve reported-currency and constant-currency growth in separate fields.

For an example of a detailed revenue breakdown, Accenture’s FY2026 Q4 results release separates revenue by consulting and managed services, geography, and industry group. That structure can help you track mix as well as the headline growth rate.

What are the key metrics for IT services companies?

Build the scorecard around what the figures tell you: the pace and composition of growth, the profit earned on that work, the visibility of future demand, the cash produced, and the capacity to deliver. Include a metric only when the company discloses it; mark it as not reported rather than filling gaps with estimates.

Revenue, growth, and business mix

  • Revenue: Record reported revenue and its currency. Keep year-over-year growth and sequential growth in different fields.
  • Constant-currency growth: Label it separately from reported-currency growth and preserve the issuer’s description of how it is calculated.
  • Mix: Where disclosed, track service type, segment, geography, and industry group. Consulting and managed-services mixes, for example, can differ and affect how headline growth or margins should be interpreted.

Accenture reported $18.68 billion in revenue and 7% local-currency year-over-year growth for Q4 FY2026. These are dated company figures, not industry benchmarks; the release provides additional breakdowns by service, geography, and industry.

Profitability and earnings

  • Operating income and margin: Keep reported accounting measures and adjusted measures in separate columns.
  • Net income and diluted EPS: Record the period and accounting basis, and do not substitute adjusted figures for reported results.
  • Adjustments: Note one-off items and retain the issuer’s reconciliation so you can see what was excluded and why.

For the quarter ended December 31, 2025, Wipro reported a 17.6% IT services operating margin. Its release also presented net income, EPS, and an adjusted view addressing a specified labor-code effect. Keep the adjustment and the reported measure distinct when entering those figures.

Bookings, book-to-bill, and backlog

  • Bookings or new bookings: Record the company’s stated figure and period.
  • Book-to-bill: Preserve whether the ratio is quarterly or trailing twelve months (TTM), and retain the issuer’s definition.
  • Backlog or remaining performance obligations: Track the label used by the company and the date or period to which the balance applies.

Accenture reported $22.17 billion in Q4 FY2026 bookings and a quarterly book-to-bill ratio of 1.2. CGI’s Q3 FY2026 results page reported $31.79 billion in backlog and a 108.1% TTM book-to-bill ratio. These examples use different companies and reporting periods; they are not directly comparable without checking each issuer’s definition and basis.

Bookings and backlog are indicators of awarded or future work, not guaranteed revenue. They may be recognized over time, changed, or cancelled, and company definitions can differ. Keep quarterly, annual, and TTM figures in separate fields rather than comparing them as though they measure the same period.

Cash generation and conversion

  • Operating cash flow: Record the cash flow statement’s reported amount.
  • Free cash flow: Add it only when the company reports it, along with the company’s definition.
  • Cash balance: Note the reporting date.
  • Cash conversion: Capture the numerator, denominator, and period—such as operating cash flow as a percentage of net income or revenue—because these ratios answer different questions.

For the quarter ended December 31, 2025, Wipro reported operating cash flows equal to 135.4% of net income. CGI’s investor results page reports cash provided by operating activities as a percentage of revenue and on a TTM basis. Do not compare these ratios without aligning their denominators and periods.

Delivery capacity and workforce

  • Utilization: Record the percentage and whether trainees are included. The denominator and inclusion rules matter.
  • Effort or delivery mix: Track onsite/offshore mix or effort mix only when disclosed, preserving the issuer’s exact label.
  • Headcount and attrition: Note the measurement date or period; distinguish quarterly figures from TTM attrition.
  • Skills and hiring: Capture relevant figures where provided, but do not infer capacity from general hiring commentary alone.

Infosys reported 83.0% utilization excluding trainees for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, and separately presents utilization including trainees and effort mix. Cognizant’s Q4 and FY2025 results provide headcount and TTM voluntary attrition. These are examples of disclosed company measures, not a common industry standard.

Guidance and management commentary

Log forward revenue or margin guidance together with the time horizon, assumptions, and any stated reason for an update. Keep it clearly labeled as guidance, with the publication date, rather than combining it with actual quarterly results. For example, Wipro CEO and Managing Director Srini Pallia said of the quarter ended December 31, 2025, “In Q3, we delivered broad-based growth in line with our expectations.” This is management commentary, not independent verification of business quality.

How do you compare IT services companies?

Start with within-company comparisons, then make cross-company comparisons only where the basis is sufficiently aligned. A single headline growth or margin figure can conceal differences in currency, fiscal calendar, service mix, and accounting treatment.

  1. Compare each issuer with itself. Review the same metric against its prior quarter and prior-year quarter, with the fiscal quarter-end dates visible.
  2. Align the periods. Confirm the calendar months covered, not just the “Q1” or “Q4” label.
  3. Align currency presentation. Compare reported-currency growth with reported-currency growth and constant-currency with constant-currency. Constant-currency methods are issuer-specific: Wipro says it translates current-period IT Services revenue using the prior-period conversion rate and notes divestitures may affect comparable growth; Infosys describes translating current-period local-currency revenue using prior-period exchange rates.
  4. Separate accounting measures from adjusted measures. Compare reported operating margin with reported operating margin, and adjusted with adjusted only after reviewing each company’s reconciliation and exclusions.
  5. Check business mix. Consider whether companies have similar proportions of consulting, managed services, or other activities before drawing conclusions about growth or margins.
  6. Validate demand metric definitions. Check whether bookings or backlog are quarterly, annual, or TTM and how each company defines them before comparing the values.

Issuer-defined and non-GAAP measures are not automatically comparable. Wipro states that its key metrics and non-GAAP measures are not based on a comprehensive set of accounting rules and should not replace IFRS measures. Read reported financial statements and the reconciliation alongside any adjusted metric.

What does book-to-bill mean for an IT services company?

Book-to-bill compares bookings received during a stated period with revenue recognized during that period. A ratio above 1 means bookings exceeded revenue on that company’s stated basis for the period; below 1 means they were lower. It is a demand indicator, not a promise that bookings will become revenue on a particular schedule.

The period basis is essential. Accenture reports quarterly and annual bookings and book-to-bill; CGI reports quarterly and TTM versions as well as backlog. Label each ratio with its company and period, and check the definition before comparing it with another issuer’s ratio.

Where should you get quarterly results and metric definitions?

Use the company’s investor-relations earnings page for releases, financial statements, presentations, and webcasts, and consult regulatory filings for official versions. The linked examples in this article lead to issuer or SEC-hosted materials for specific reporting periods, not continuously updated data. For every quarterly update, follow the release to its definitions and reconciliations rather than copying a headline figure without its basis.
