To track Ethereum gas fees, use a live tracker to watch network conditions, then check the fee estimate for your exact transaction in your wallet before signing. If the transaction is flexible, waiting for a lower base fee may reduce its cost—but no fixed hour is guaranteed to be cheaper.
What determines an Ethereum transaction fee?
On Ethereum mainnet, the transaction fee depends on two things: the amount of gas the action uses and the effective fee per unit of gas. Gas measures the computation required to execute a transaction. A straightforward ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas in Ethereum.org’s illustrative example; a contract interaction can use a different amount.
Ethereum’s EIP-1559 fee market separates the per-gas fee into a base fee and a priority fee. The base fee is set by the protocol and adjusts with recent block demand: it rises after blocks use more than the target and falls after blocks use less. The base fee is burned. The priority fee is a tip that can encourage validators to include a transaction sooner.

A transaction also specifies a maximum fee per gas. That is a ceiling, not a prediction of the final charge. The maximum must cover the base fee and priority fee for inclusion; any authorized fee allowance that is not used is refunded. EIP-1559 describes the rule this way: “Senders will always pay the base fee per gas of the block their transaction was included in, and they will pay the priority fee per gas set in the transaction, as long as the combined amount of the two fees doesn’t exceed the transaction’s maximum fee per gas.” The specification was authored by Vitalik Buterin, Eric Conner, Rick Dudley, Matthew Slipper, Ian Norden, and Abdelhamid Bakhta (EIP-1559).

How to track Ethereum gas fees before sending

Open a live tracker or estimator. Ethereum.org lists Etherscan’s Ethereum Gas Tracker and Blocknative’s gas estimator among the available monitoring tools. Check the tracker’s timestamp and the meaning of its estimate categories; a displayed estimate is a snapshot, not a promise of the fee your transaction will pay.

Prepare the transaction in your wallet. Enter the recipient, amount, or contract action so the wallet can estimate the gas required for that specific transaction. A generic tracker cannot know the gas usage of every action.

Compare like with like. Check estimates for the same transaction on the same network. Separate changes in the base fee from changes in the suggested priority fee: the former reflects block demand, while the latter is a tip associated with inclusion urgency.

If the transaction can wait, check again later. Compare the base-fee trend rather than relying on a single reading. Waiting may help if demand eases, but estimates can change from block to block and there is no established universally cheapest hour, day, or fixed threshold.

Review the wallet’s fee details before signing. Check the gas limit, maximum fee per gas, priority fee, and displayed total. Do not set the fee cap below what is required for inclusion; a lower cap is not a reliable way to guarantee a cheaper completed transaction.

After confirmation, distinguish the charge from the cap. The fee paid is based on the gas used and the applicable fee per gas in the included block. The maximum fee is authorization headroom, not necessarily the amount charged; unused allowance is returned under EIP-1559’s fee mechanics.

When are Ethereum gas fees lower?
Fees can be lower when block demand eases and the base fee falls. Tracking the trend and checking again later can help if a transaction is not time-sensitive. If prompt inclusion matters, a higher priority fee may be appropriate, but the sources do not establish a universal price threshold that balances urgency and cost.

Example: calculate a fee without mistaking it for a live quote
Ethereum.org gives an illustrative ETH transfer using 21,000 gas, a 10 gwei base fee, and a 2 gwei priority fee. The combined 12 gwei per gas multiplied by 21,000 gas equals 252,000 gwei, or 0.000252 ETH. These are example inputs, not a current fee quote or a universal charge; another transaction may use a different amount of gas, and network fees change with conditions.
Mainnet trackers and other networks
Make sure the tracker and wallet estimate refer to the network on which you intend to transact. Ethereum.org also points readers to monitoring options for layer-2 networks, but costs, bridging fees, and application support vary. The available information does not establish that any specific layer 2 is always cheaper overall, so compare the complete action and network rather than assuming a lower displayed transaction fee tells the whole story.
