There is no single “AI visibility” number. Track brand mentions, linked citations, search-feature impressions, and site visits or conversions as separate signals: each answers a different question, and the available dashboards measure different things.
What counts as a mention, a citation, and an impression?
A brand mention is the appearance of your brand name in an AI-generated answer. A citation is a link to a source page. An impression is a search-provider measure of how often a supported search feature displayed content. A visit or conversion is an outcome recorded by your site’s analytics tools. A mention or citation does not necessarily lead to a visit.
These measures should not be combined into one cross-platform score. Google’s Search Console generative AI report measures impressions for specified Google Search features; Bing Webmaster Tools reports citation activity on specified Microsoft surfaces; Microsoft Clarity’s citation dashboard reports citation activity and excludes conventional impressions and click-through rates.
Which tool should you use?
| Option | What it measures | Useful detail | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console Generative AI performance report | Impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search | Page, country, device, and date dimensions | Google-specific; it may not appear without enough impressions. Standard report limitations apply, and the newest data may be preliminary. Google Search Console Help |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Citations on Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations | Total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and trends | Citations do not establish ranking or placement within an answer; grounding queries are sampled. Bing Webmaster Tools help |
| Microsoft Clarity Citation dashboard | Citation activity in AI-generated answers | Cited-page and query insights, including comparative presence | Its documentation excludes traditional rankings, impressions, and click-through-rate measurement. Microsoft Learn |
| Cross-platform monitoring software | Vendor-defined sampled mentions or citations across selected AI platforms | Can collect prompt-level observations in one dashboard | Coverage and accuracy are vendor claims; the cited vendor documentation does not establish complete coverage or access to providers’ internal data. How to set up a useful tracking workflow
1. Decide what you need to know
Start with the question, not the tool. Are you checking whether your owned pages are cited, whether the brand is named, how often a Google Search AI feature displays your content, or whether visibility leads to visits and conversions? Choose the metric that matches the question; do not treat impressions, citations, mentions, and visits as substitutes.

2. Establish Google and Microsoft baselines
- Google: In Search Console, open the Generative AI performance report. Review its pages, countries, devices, and dates dimensions. Google reported that worldwide rollout was complete on August 31, 2026. If you cannot see the report, a property may not have accumulated enough impressions; also check its eligibility for Search features. The report’s date dimension uses Pacific Time, and the newest data can be preliminary. See Google’s report documentation.
- Bing: In Bing Webmaster Tools, open AI Performance and review citation totals, average cited pages, sampled grounding query phrases, page-level activity, and changes over time. Treat query phrases as a sample, and do not infer where a cited page appeared in an answer or how it compared in ranking. See Bing’s report guidance.
- Clarity, if useful: Open its AI Visibility Citation dashboard. Verify the domain by installing Clarity tracking code or connecting through Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools. Use the dashboard for citation activity, not for conventional ranking, impressions, or click-through rates. Read the Clarity dashboard overview.
3. Track sampled mentions across platforms
The official dashboards above provide provider-specific measures, not one unified mention count across every major assistant. If you need to know whether your brand appears in answers across several platforms, build a repeatable prompt set. For each run, record the date, platform, exact prompt and response, whether the brand appears, any citation URLs, and the cited page. Rerun the same prompts on a fixed cadence and compare the series. This is a consistent sample, not an exhaustive or deterministic account of all answers.
Monitoring software can automate some of this collection. Surva.ai says its dashboard tracks prompt-level brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, with citation data when available. That describes the vendor’s stated offering; it does not verify completeness, accuracy against providers’ internal logs, or superiority over other tools. Review Surva.ai’s documentation.

4. Keep a separate metric ledger
- Brand mention rate: The share of tracked answer runs in which the brand appears. Record the prompt set, platforms, and denominator; this is a sampled metric.
- Citations and cited pages: Keep the provider’s own definitions and scope. Bing’s citation totals and average cited pages are not rankings. Bing explains its measures here.
- Search-feature impressions: Use Google’s report for its supported features and dimensions; do not label this an all-platform mention count. Google documents the report’s scope.
- Visits and business outcomes: Track sessions, leads, and conversions in your site’s analytics stack, separately from answer visibility. The official documentation cited here does not provide a single cross-platform attribution method.
- Context: Preserve exact prompt or query samples, cited URL, provider, country and device where available, date range, report version or preview status, and any vendor-defined sampling rules.
How to interpret citation trends without overclaiming
A citation count does not explain why a system selected a page, how prominently it appeared, whether the answer named the brand, or whether a reader clicked through. Microsoft announced four preview capabilities for Bing AI Performance on June 16, 2026: Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare. They are intended to help publishers examine query context, themes, relative citation presence, and change over time. Microsoft describes Citation Share as observational—not traffic share, a ranking system, a competitor-domain report, or a content-quality score. The announcement described a global preview, so availability and terminology may change. Read Microsoft’s announcement.

For Google Search generative AI features, Google’s stated baseline is ordinary Search eligibility: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google says there is no special schema requirement, no need to divide pages into tiny “chunks,” and no need to write in a special AI style; it also says Google Search ignores llms.txt. These are Google Search statements, not guarantees that a page will be selected or cited. Google cautions against pursuing inauthentic mentions and says third-party tools cannot access its internal ranking or AI systems. Read Google’s guidance on AI features and your website.
