You can measure blood pressure at home with a properly fitted, validated upper-arm monitor, but cholesterol is tracked with periodic blood tests—not by how you feel or with a home cuff. Keep a consistent record of readings and lab results, then review them with a healthcare professional; home tracking supports care but does not replace diagnosis or treatment.
What you can track at home—and what requires a test
Blood pressure is suitable for routine home measurement. Cholesterol requires a blood test called a lipid profile, which measures LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol. Other heart-risk factors, such as weight, waist circumference, blood glucose, smoking, diet, physical activity, and sleep, may also come up in screening or care discussions.
Tracking is most useful as a record to share with your care team. A series of blood-pressure readings can show patterns that a single office measurement may miss. The CDC notes that as many as 1 in 3 people with a high blood-pressure reading at a doctor’s office may have normal readings outside it; differences can reflect factors such as nervousness and measurement technique. This is a population estimate, not a way to interpret any one person’s readings. CDC guidance on measuring blood pressure explains home measurement.

The American Heart Association recommends an automatic, cuff-style upper-arm monitor. Look for a device validated for accuracy and select a cuff that fits your measured upper-arm circumference. Wrist and finger monitors are not recommended for routine home use because they are less reliable.

- If the user is pregnant, a child, or an older adult, confirm that the device’s validation applies to that population.
- Follow the monitor’s instructions, and take it to an appointment so a healthcare professional can check your technique and compare its readings with office equipment.
- Arrange future accuracy checks according to the manufacturer’s instructions or a professional’s advice.
The AHA’s home blood-pressure monitoring guidance covers device choice and use. Do not assume a product is validated or a replacement cuff is compatible without checking the device details.
How to take and record a home blood-pressure reading
- Prepare for the measurement. For 30 minutes beforehand, avoid smoking, caffeine, and exercise. Empty your bladder.
- Sit quietly for five minutes. Keep your back supported and feet flat on the floor; do not cross your legs. Avoid talking or using your phone.
- Position the cuff and arm. Put the cuff on bare skin, with its lower edge just above the bend of the elbow. Support the arm so the cuff is at heart level.
- Take two readings. Measure at consistent times if that is the schedule your care team recommends. Take two readings one minute apart.
- Write down both results. Record the date, time, systolic and diastolic values for each measurement, and any context your care team asks you to note.
- Bring the record to appointments. Share your log or the device’s stored readings, and bring the monitor when asked or when technique needs checking.
Follow your clinician’s advice on how often to measure. There is no one schedule in this general guidance that fits everyone. The AHA also recommends having a professional check that you are using the monitor correctly and that its results are comparable to office equipment.

How cholesterol testing works
You cannot tell whether your cholesterol is high from symptoms. The CDC says, “The only way to know whether you have high cholesterol is to get your cholesterol checked.” A lipid profile is a blood draw that measures LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol.

People with heart disease, diabetes, or a family history of high cholesterol may need testing more often. Ask your healthcare professional what interval fits your circumstances and whether you need to fast; some people may be asked to fast for 8–12 hours before the test. Do not assume fasting is always required. See the CDC’s cholesterol testing guidance.

The result needs context: your care team can interpret it alongside factors such as age, family history, other health conditions, smoking, blood pressure treatment, and lifestyle. From 2017 to 2020, 86.4 million U.S. adults aged 20 or older had high or borderline-high cholesterol, defined by the CDC for that statistic as total cholesterol of at least 200 mg/dL. That population figure does not estimate an individual’s risk. CDC cholesterol information provides the broader context.
Keep a simple record of other risk factors
Use appointments to ask which other measures matter for you and how often they should be checked. The AHA’s consumer screening overview includes the following broad U.S. intervals; they are not individualized instructions.

| Factor | General screening guidance | What to clarify with your care team |
|---|---|---|
| Blood pressure | At regular visits, or at least annually if below 120/80 mm Hg | Whether to monitor at home and how often |
| Cholesterol | Every 4–6 years for normal-risk adults; more often with elevated risk | Your personal interval and whether to fast for the test |
| Weight and BMI | At regular visits | Whether these measures are relevant to your care |
| Waist circumference | As needed for some people | Whether it adds useful information for you |
| Blood glucose | At least every three years for the indicated screening group | Whether you are in that group and whether more frequent checks are appropriate |
The AHA also identifies smoking, diet, physical activity, and sleep as heart-health considerations. These are useful topics to discuss, not a universal self-screening schedule. See the AHA overview of screening and heart-risk factors.

When a very high blood-pressure reading needs urgent attention
If a reading is higher than 180/120 mm Hg, wait at least one minute and measure again. If the repeat reading remains very high, contact a healthcare professional immediately. If a very high reading occurs with chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking, call 911. Follow the AHA’s instructions for very high readings.
What home tracking can—and cannot—tell you
Home measurements can help a clinician confirm a suspected blood-pressure problem or assess whether treatment is working, but a healthcare professional must interpret the pattern and full clinical picture. The AHA states that only a doctor or other medical professional can confirm a high blood-pressure diagnosis. Do not start, stop, or change medication based only on readings at home.
Similarly, a blood-pressure monitor cannot measure cholesterol. Use scheduled lipid-profile testing and review the results with your care team. Tracking neither establishes a diagnosis nor replaces individualized medical advice.
