For the most reliable NHL injury update, check the player’s club first, then NHL.com coverage, and confirm the player’s status in the official lineup close to game time. A practice appearance, a projected return, or an injured-reserve designation can provide context, but none alone confirms that the player will play.
Where to check for current NHL injury updates
- Check the player’s club. Look at the team’s official website and verified channels for player-specific announcements, practice reports, and pregame availability updates. The club is the authority on its player’s status; team medical staff determine whether an injury warrants injured reserve under club medical standards, according to the NHL Hockey Operations Guidelines.
- Scan NHL.com. The recurring NHL Status Report provides league-wide updates, with examples of statuses ranging from “no timetable” to projected returns and players back in the lineup. Use it as a roundup, not a replacement for the club’s latest report.
- Use the NHL app as a notification channel. NHL advertises news notifications and live updates on its app feature page. That page does not promise a dedicated injury alert for every player, so verify significant claims against the club or NHL.com.
- Recheck near the game. A status can change after practice or a coach’s media availability. Check the date and time of the report, then consult the official lineup or game report for the game in question.
For fantasy or other time-sensitive decisions, keep the latest source and publication date with the update. Do not turn a medical inference or outside estimate into a diagnosis or a confirmed return date.
How to judge what an update actually confirms
Read the wording as a milestone, not as a single countdown to a return. An update can describe progress without confirming availability.

|---|---|---|
| “Day to day” or “no timetable” | The club’s reported status as of that update. | A specific return date or that the player will be available for the next game. |
| Skating or practicing | A reported participation or progress milestone. | Medical clearance, activation from IR, or a place in the game lineup. |
| “Expected” or “likely” to return | A projection reported at that time. | Confirmation that the player has been cleared or will play. |
| Activated from IR | An administrative roster milestone. For IR, activation to play is subject to the CBA’s medical-clearance and notice requirements. | By itself, a confirmed appearance in a particular game. |
| Named in the official lineup | Confirmation that the player is playing that game. | A guarantee about later games or future health. |
When updates conflict, compare four things separately: the source’s authority, the publication date and time, whether the wording is confirmed or projected, and the milestone being described. A newer practice note, for example, may be more recent than an older roster transaction but still does not mean the player is in the lineup.

What NHL injured reserve and LTIR timelines mean
Injured reserve (IR)
The NHL Hockey Operations Guidelines say a player who is physically unable to play for at least seven days after the injury date can be placed on IR. The club’s medical staff determines whether the injury qualifies under club standards. Once placed on IR, the player is ineligible to compete for at least seven days.
The NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement says a player may be eligible for activation to play beginning on the eighth day after the injury, or later, only when medically cleared by the club physician; notice and verification are also required before the player plays. This is an eligibility rule, not a forecast. The seven-day minimum does not mean the player will return on day eight.
Long-term injured reserve (LTIR)
In its October 3, 2026 report on Aleksander Barkov, NHL.com stated that a player on LTIR must miss at least 10 games and 24 days. Those are minimums associated with the designation, not a scheduled return date. The same report described Barkov’s timeline as unknown, illustrating why the minimum should not be treated as a prediction.

A simple tracking routine
- Open the player’s club injury or team-news page and note the report’s publication date, exact wording, and any stated next update or projected window.
- Check NHL.com’s latest Status Report for additional league-wide context, comparing its date and wording with the club’s report.
- After a practice or coach media availability, look for a fresh club update. Treat skating or practice participation as progress, not confirmation of availability.
- Check for an IR or LTIR placement or activation, and interpret it under the applicable roster rules rather than as a return estimate.
- Before the game, verify the player’s name in the official lineup or game report. That is the confirmation that the player is playing that game.
How to record an update without overstating it
Keep a short dated note with the source, the source’s exact wording, and what it actually confirms. For example: “Club update, [date]: day to day; no return date stated.” If a later report says the player is skating, record that as a new progress update rather than converting it into a date. Update the note when a stronger milestone appears, especially an official lineup.
