Use NHL.com’s goalie statistics page to track a goalie’s starts, appearances, shots faced, saves, goals allowed, and time on ice. Check both the season totals and the By Game view: the totals show cumulative usage, while game lines show how that usage developed.
Set the season and game type first
Open the NHL goalie statistics page and select the season and game type that match your question. The page is live, and its default season may not be the one you want; confirm the selector before recording or comparing totals.
Search for the goalie by name. To review a season’s running totals, use the season summary. To follow appearances in sequence, switch to By Game. NHL explains that its stats can be reviewed for a single season, multiple seasons, or game by game, including games in which more than one goalie appeared.

| Question | Fields to follow | How to read them |
|---|---|---|
| How often has the goalie played? | GP and GS | GP is games played; GS is games started. Use GS when counting starts, and do not treat every appearance as a start. |
| How much has the goalie been used? | GS, GP, and TOI | These describe starts, appearances, and time on ice. They show usage, not why a coach made a decision. |
| How much work has the goalie faced? | SA and saves (Svs) | SA is shots against; saves show how many were stopped. Read saves alongside shots faced and goals allowed rather than in isolation. |
| How have results looked? | Sv%, GAA, and GA | Save percentage and goals-against average summarize results; goals against provides the corresponding count in the selected view. |
These are practical ways to organize the NHL table’s fields, not an official NHL rating system. Wins alone do not show how often or how heavily a goalie was used.
Build a game-by-game record
- Open the season summary. Confirm the selected season and game type, then find the goalie and note GP and GS separately.
- Switch to By Game. For each appearance, record the date or game, SA, saves, GA, TOI, and result.
- Keep usage and results in separate columns. Track GS, GP, TOI, and SA as usage or volume; track saves, Sv%, GAA, and GA as performance information.
- Return to the season summary when you want cumulative totals. Refresh the live page after games, since current totals can change.
If you want a personal running record, keep a dated note or spreadsheet and update it after each game. That is simply a logging method; it is not a personal tracking feature provided by NHL.com.
Compare goalies or stretches fairly
Compare one dimension at a time, and make sure the time windows match. A full-season total and a short stretch of games are not equivalent comparisons.
Rank #2
- Usage: GS, GP, and TOI.
- Workload volume: SA and saves.
- Results: Sv%, GAA, and GA.
- Time window: an individual game, a selected span of games, or the full season.
For a useful workload picture, combine how often a goalie played with time on ice and shots faced. Then read the results in context: a high save count can reflect more shots faced, while a low count alone does not establish whether the goalie performed well.
What this tracking can—and cannot—tell you
Official game and season statistics document recorded starts, appearances, workload, and results. They do not by themselves show that workload caused a performance change, assess fatigue medically, or confirm who will start a future game. Treat the figures as a record of what happened, not a forecast.
