Track each platform in its own first-party dashboard, because Amazon rank, Google position, and YouTube views measure different things. Record the value with its marketplace, query, video, date, and data-freshness details; then compare trends instead of treating one number as a universal popularity score.
What you are actually measuring
A useful report starts by defining the metric before collecting it. Amazon publishes relative ranks, Google Search Console publishes an average position, and YouTube publishes legitimate video plays. The numbers are not interchangeable.
| Platform | Primary metric | Definition | Freshness | Useful dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Sales Rank and category rank | Relative customer activity compared with other books. A lower number is generally a better rank within that category. | Updated at least daily; a new value can take up to two days to appear. | ASIN or ISBN, marketplace, category, timestamp |
| Google Search | Average position | The average of the topmost position occupied by your property for each impression in Google Search results. | Search Analytics data is typically available after 2–3 days. | Query, page, country, device, date |
| YouTube | Views | Legitimate views counted when playback starts across Shorts, long-form videos and live streams. | Analytics data usually lags 48–72 hours; Studio Realtime supplies earlier signals. | Video, day, country, traffic source, format |
Keep the platform, metric definition and collection time beside every value. That prevents a delayed analytics figure from being mistaken for a live count or an Amazon rank from being read as a sales total.

1. Identify the exact item and marketplace
- Open the book’s Amazon detail page or KDP record and copy the ASIN (or ISBN).
- Write down the marketplace, such as Amazon.com, rather than assuming every country site uses the same rank.
- List the displayed Best Sellers Rank and each category rank you intend to follow.
2. Take repeatable snapshots
Choose a consistent time and time zone. At each check, save:
#1 Best Overall
- ASIN or ISBN
- Marketplace
- Rank type (overall Best Sellers Rank or a named category)
- Rank value
- Date, time and time zone
- Product format, if the page distinguishes editions
A spreadsheet row might therefore read: “ASIN, Amazon.com, Kindle Store, 12,345, 2026-09-30 09:00 UTC.” Keeping category names prevents a later chart from mixing unrelated rankings.
3. Interpret movement as a relative signal
Amazon KDP states that rankings are relative: your Sales Rank can change even when your book’s activity stays the same, because other books’ activity changed. Do not convert a rank into a fixed number of sales, and do not compare ranks from unrelated categories as if they represented the same market.
4. Allow for update delay
Amazon says rankings are updated at least daily, but a change can take up to two days to appear. Mark a missing or unchanged value as “not yet updated” rather than inventing an estimate. For orders, revenue and units, use seller or KDP reports; rank alone is not a demand measure.

- Comparing Amazon.com with another country’s marketplace without labeling the change.
- Replacing a category rank with the overall rank in a later row.
- Judging a launch from one snapshot before the two-day update window has passed.
- Claiming that rank 5 means a specific number of sales.
How to track your Google search ranking
1. Use Search Console’s first-party report
- Verify the correct property in Google Search Console.
- Open Performance.
- Review clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR) and average position.
- Add query and page dimensions. Add country and device filters when those segments matter to your audience.
- Choose a date range, compare it with a previous period, and export the result.
Google defines position as a Search result metric and reports it as an average across impressions. It is not a guaranteed rank for a single manual search by one person.
Rank #2
2. Read average position correctly
Suppose a page appeared at position 2 for one impression and position 8 for another. The report’s average is an impression-weighted summary, not a promise that every searcher saw position 5. A property can also occupy different positions for different queries, pages, countries and devices.
3. Automate exports with the Search Analytics API
For a scheduled dashboard, authorize the Search Analytics API and request a date range with dimensions such as date, query, page, country or device. Google recommends running one-day queries daily because data is normally available after 2–3 days. Page through the response and design around the documented limit of 50,000 rows per day per search type. Store the request date range and the retrieval time so a later refresh can be distinguished from a new observation.
4. Explain why your live search differs
- Search Console averages impressions, while a live search is one observation.
- Location, device, search history and timing can change the results page.
- Featured results and other result features affect where a page appears.
- Google ranking systems evaluate pages using many signals, so a query can move without a single visible site edit.
Use Search Console for the site’s observed search performance and a carefully documented manual check for a specific searcher scenario. Trend both; do not substitute one for the other.
How to track YouTube views over time
1. Start in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Analytics at channel level, or open a video and select its Analytics tab.
- Set the date range and review views, watch time, subscribers and traffic sources.
- Open Realtime when you need an early signal for recent activity.
- Label exports with the video, date range and the time they were downloaded.
YouTube counts a view when legitimate playback starts across Shorts, long-form videos (VOD) and live streams. Realtime is useful for direction, but it is not the same data set as finalized Analytics.
Rank #3
2. Build a custom report with authorized APIs
The YouTube Analytics API can return views, engagedViews and watchTime, with dimensions such as day, video, country or traffic source. Use the Reporting API when you need bulk historical files. When software needs current individual-video statistics, use the YouTube Data API and clearly label those values as current counts rather than processed Analytics totals.
3. Account for processing latency
YouTube Analytics commonly takes 48–72 hours to process. A report for yesterday may therefore be incomplete. Keep Realtime figures in a separate column, and do not overwrite a finalized daily series with an early estimate.
A practical cross-platform tracking sheet
Use one row per observation and never overwrite the original value. These columns work for all three services:
| Column | Example use |
|---|---|
| Platform | Amazon, Google Search, or YouTube |
| Entity | ASIN/ISBN, page URL, query, channel or video ID |
| Metric | Category rank, average position, views, watch time |
| Scope | Marketplace/category, country/device, or traffic source |
| Value | The number exactly as displayed or returned |
| Observed at | Timestamp and time zone when you collected it |
| Data date range | Especially important for Search Console and YouTube reports |
| Freshness status | Final, processing, delayed, or Realtime |
Cadence that matches each platform
- Amazon: daily snapshots, with a two-day window before interpreting a change.
- Google: schedule one-day API queries daily, then analyze once the 2–3-day availability delay has passed.
- YouTube: collect Realtime for launches, but use the 48–72-hour Analytics series for historical comparisons.
A small local logger
This dependency-free Python program appends manually verified observations to a CSV file, preserving the timestamp and scope:
import csv
from datetime import datetime, timezone
from pathlib import Path
path = Path("ranking_tracking.csv")
fields = ["observed_at", "platform", "entity", "metric", "scope", "value", "status"]
row = {
"observed_at": datetime.now(timezone.utc).isoformat(),
"platform": input("Platform: ").strip(),
"entity": input("ASIN, page, query, channel or video: ").strip(),
"metric": input("Metric: ").strip(),
"scope": input("Marketplace, category, country, device or traffic source: ").strip(),
"value": input("Value: ").strip(),
"status": input("Status (final, processing, delayed or Realtime): ").strip(),
}
new_file = not path.exists()
with path.open("a", newline="", encoding="utf-8") as file:
writer = csv.DictWriter(file, fieldnames=fields)
if new_file:
writer.writeheader()
writer.writerow(row)
print(f"Saved {path}")
Use the original export files as your audit trail; the logger is for a normalized index, not a replacement for platform reports.
Or skip the browser setup
When you need a visual record of an Amazon listing, a Search Console-related page or a YouTube page, ScreenshotNeo can capture the URL through one request. It is a screenshot service, not a replacement for Amazon, Search Console or YouTube’s metric APIs: use the official data for numbers and a screenshot for page-state evidence. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status.

Troubleshooting common tracking problems
Amazon rank is missing or unchanged
Check the marketplace, ASIN/ISBN and category first. If they are correct, wait through the possible two-day display delay. Use KDP or seller reports when the question is units or revenue rather than relative rank.
Best Value
Search Console position looks worse than a manual search
Confirm that you are comparing the same query, page, country, device and date range. Search Console is an average over impressions; a personalized live result cannot reproduce that average.
Search Analytics API returns too many or too few rows
Reduce the date range, add dimensions deliberately, page through results and stay within 50,000 rows per day per search type. Query one day at a time and expect the normal 2–3-day data delay.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
YouTube Studio and your dashboard disagree
Check whether one value is Realtime, Data API current statistics or processed Analytics. Verify the date range, video ID and time zone, then allow 48–72 hours for Analytics processing.
A screenshot contains a consent banner or fails to load
For a manual capture, accept the banner and wait for the page to finish loading. With ScreenshotNeo, inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers; failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and cache hits are identified and not billed.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compare an Amazon rank directly with a Google position?
No. Amazon rank is relative activity within a marketplace and category, while Google position is an impression-based search-results average. Keep them as separate series.
Should a YouTube Realtime number be used in a monthly report?
Use it as an early indicator only. Replace or reconcile it with the processed Analytics value after the normal 48–72-hour delay.
What should I preserve for an audit?
Keep the original export or API response, the entity identifier, scope, date range, retrieval time, and freshness status alongside your normalized tracking row.
Does ScreenshotNeo provide ranking or view counts?
No. It captures page images and metadata. Use Amazon, Search Console and YouTube first-party reports or authorized APIs for the metrics themselves.
