Keep one private season ledger for every club and national-team appearance. Record actual minutes alongside the match context—team, competition, role and substitution times—then review patterns with the player and coaches. Minutes help describe opportunity; by themselves, they do not measure a child’s development.

Set up one season ledger for every team

A single record makes it easier to see the whole season without adding club and national-team totals twice. A spreadsheet or paper log is enough if it is updated consistently. Keep the file private and include only details needed to support a useful review.

Fields to record for each match

  • Season and player identifier: use a minimal identifier, especially if the file may be shared.
  • Match context: date, team, competition, age group, opponent and match duration.
  • Record source: note whether the information came from an official match record, a coach or family observation.
  • Participation: mark whether the player started, came on as a substitute, was selected but unused, or whether participation information is unavailable.
  • Role and minutes: note position or role, entry and exit times, and actual minutes played.
  • Brief development note: record a specific role-related observation or current development focus rather than a long list of speculative performance statistics.

Keep a zero-minute appearance distinct from an unused-squad selection and from a match with no reliable record. These are different situations and should not be collapsed into a blank or a zero.

Reconcile minutes after the match

  1. Write down the match duration and the time the player entered and left the field.
  2. Calculate the time played from those entry and exit points; account for multiple substitutions if they occur.
  3. Check that the result makes sense against the match duration. If a time is uncertain, mark it as an estimate and retain the source of the entry.
  4. Save the appearance under the team and competition where it occurred, rather than entering it again in a separate national-team total.

Training attendance or load can be logged if it is useful and can be recorded consistently. A family log is not a medical workload system; do not use it to make injury or return-to-play decisions.

Choose a tracking method you can maintain

Paper, a spreadsheet or an app can all support the same ledger. The practical choice is the one that makes accurate entry easy across every team the player represents.

Method Useful when Check before choosing
Paper log You want a simple match-day record without a device or account. How you will total minutes and preserve a season copy.
Spreadsheet You want to customize fields and summarize appearances by team or competition. Whether formulas are correct, records can be exported or copied, and access to a minor’s information is limited.
App You want to enter substitutions on a device or have the app calculate totals. Privacy and sharing controls, export options, support for multiple teams, and whether the workflow is simple enough to use consistently.

Two products describe relevant features, but these are vendor claims rather than independent evaluations. Soccer Stats says its family app records minutes and other match events, builds season records, is free and requires no account. Pitch Planner describes live player-minute tracking and a post-match view intended to inform later lineups. Features and availability may change; neither description establishes how well the products compare with one another or with a spreadsheet.

Review the record for context, not as a score

At a monthly or termly review, summarize minutes by team and competition, then look at participation patterns alongside role, level of challenge and the player’s current goals. Ask questions that can lead to a useful conversation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Has playing time become concentrated in one team or interrupted across the season?
  • Does the player understand their role in each environment?
  • Is the competition level challenging but appropriate for the player?
  • What is the player trying to improve, and what have coaches observed in training and matches?
  • What next opportunity would help the player apply what they are learning?

Include the player’s own reflection: what felt challenging, what they learned and what they would like to work on. Keep the discussion age-appropriate and supportive rather than making the child feel responsible for chasing a total.

FIFA’s training guidance emphasizes age- and maturation-appropriate work, long-term planning and monitoring. Its playing-opportunities guidance describes the importance of development opportunities and balance. Neither makes an individual player’s minutes total a verdict on progress.

FIFA figures are context, not targets

FIFA’s playing-opportunities page reports an average of 44 matches per season for a 14-year-old male player at an academy in a top-20 member association, including friendlies; 22% fewer playing opportunities for girls than boys across U-12 to U-21 key stages in the top 50 member associations; and that 69% of academies worldwide do not use video analysis for player development. The page displays 2022 copyright, but the reviewed text does not state the data year. These figures describe populations and academy contexts, not recommended targets for an individual child.

The page displays 2022 copyright but does not state the data year in the reviewed text. These are training-exposure figures, not match-minute benchmarks.

Keep club and national-team information in the right lane

A family minutes ledger is separate from confidential medical records. If an injury, health issue or return-to-play question affects availability across teams, involve the player’s parent or guardian and the responsible medical and coaching contacts, using the relevant consent and privacy procedures.

UEFA announced on 2 July 2026 a medical handover pilot for the 2026/27 season. It is intended to help medical staff exchange relevant information when players move between club and national-team environments, using the existing Team Information Management Exchange (TIME) tool and subject to player consent and data-protection requirements. UEFA said the initial scope is Europe’s senior men’s and women’s national teams and the clubs of players called up to those squads, with wider availability an aim for later seasons. The announcement does not establish a system for sharing youth players’ minutes or coverage of youth national teams. Read UEFA’s announcement.

UEFA’s 2026 Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations, effective 1 June 2026, include youth-development programme requirements for clubs within that licensing framework: a written programme, regular implementation and quality review, age-group football education, medical support including medical records, and review and feedback. These are not universal legal requirements for every club or family. See Article 19.

Protect the player’s information and wellbeing

Keep only information that serves a clear purpose, restrict access to people who need it for their role, and follow the club, association and local data-protection rules that apply. FIFA’s safeguarding policy guidance is directed at football stakeholders and practitioners supporting children, and calls for policies, plans and programmes suited to local context.

A ledger works best as a prompt for a constructive conversation: it can show patterns and help identify questions, but it cannot establish a universal minimum or ideal number of minutes for a particular age, position, sex or competition. The reviewed guidance does not prescribe one standard youth-minutes form either.
