You can track a cell phone location online in two legitimate ways: find your own lost phone through the Apple or Google account linked to it, or view another person’s location after they knowingly share it with you. The official services covered here do not offer a supported way to locate an arbitrary person’s live phone just by entering a phone number.
How can I track a cell phone location online?
Choose the route that matches what you need to locate:
- Your own lost phone: Sign in to the official Apple Find My or Google Find Hub service with the account associated with the device. Recovery depends on the service being set up and enabled on that phone.
- Another person: They must choose to share their location with you through a supported sharing feature. Family membership or knowing someone’s phone number does not, by itself, give you access to their location.
These routes locate a device through its linked account or show a person’s location through a deliberate share. They are different from app location permissions, which control whether an app can access location, and from access to someone’s account. None is a general phone-number lookup service. The official Apple and Google services described here do not support finding an arbitrary person’s live phone location simply by entering a phone number. For a phone you own, use its linked Apple Account or Google Account and the platform’s recovery service. For another person, ask them to share their location with you. Avoid phone-number lookup sites and covert monitoring apps that claim to reveal someone’s location without their knowledge.

How do I find my lost iPhone?
- Open Apple’s Find My service and sign in with the Apple Account associated with your iPhone. Follow Apple’s current instructions for the device and account.
- If the iPhone appears, use the available Find My options to locate it and, where appropriate, secure it. Find My iPhone must have been enabled for the described recovery capability.
- Secure your Apple Account and follow Apple’s guidance if you think the phone was stolen. Do not assume the service can always return a current or precise position.
Apple says its Find My network may be able to find an enabled iPhone for up to 24 hours after it is powered off or disconnected from the internet. This is a stated capability, not a guarantee for every phone or situation. Apple also says that turning off Find My or the Find My network prevents locating, locking, or erasing a lost iPhone while it is powered down. How do I find my lost Android phone?
- Open Google’s Find Hub and sign in with the Google Account associated with the phone.
- Use Google’s Find Hub setup and recovery instructions to check the device and available actions. Google says users can secure or lock a device remotely.
- Follow the options shown for your device. Do not assume that every model or configuration will provide a precise location, particularly if the phone is offline.
Google currently lists Android 6 and above for the Find Hub app and Android 9 and above for the Find Hub network. These are platform requirements stated on Google’s Find Hub page; actual availability depends on the phone and its setup. Google says network location data is encrypted using the device’s PIN, pattern, or password.

Can I share my location with family?
Yes, if you choose to share it through a supported feature. On Apple devices, Find My lets you share your location with people you select. Joining a Family Sharing group does not automatically make your location visible to other family members; you still have to share it. If you stop sharing, Apple says your location disappears from that person’s Find My, Maps, Contacts, and Messages apps, and they may notice the change. Google also offers location sharing. It depends on location settings and permissions; some features may require background location access. Sharing is a deliberate choice, not a way to silently locate someone. Google describes how location permissions work in its location privacy information.

Lost-device recovery and person-to-person sharing are different

How can I tell if someone is tracking my phone?
Unwanted monitoring can involve stalkerware: software installed without your knowledge that may track location and access communications or other data. A location permission or a location share is not, by itself, proof that stalkerware is installed. The Federal Trade Commission recommends putting safety first if you suspect monitoring.
- If you think someone may be monitoring your phone, consider using a different device to contact a domestic violence advocate or law enforcement. An advocate can help you make a technology-safety plan.
- Before resetting or replacing the phone, consider preserving evidence. A sudden change, such as removing software or changing account access, may alert an abuser.
- If you decide to reset the phone, the FTC cautions against restoring all apps from a backup, because that could reinstall stalkerware. Make this decision with qualified support where relevant.
Read the FTC’s Stalkerware: What To Know for safety guidance. Do not immediately uninstall something you suspect is monitoring you without considering the risk of alerting the person and planning for your safety.

What if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is moving with me?
A Bluetooth item tag locates an item; it is not a legitimate substitute for tracking a person’s phone. Apple warns against using AirTags or compatible accessories to track people or property that does not belong to you. Apple and Google support an industry specification intended to alert users across iOS and Android when compatible unknown trackers move with them.
Apple’s unknown-tracker safety guidance explains how to check an alert, locate a tracker, and disable it so its owner no longer receives current location updates. Apple says Android 6 and above can automatically notify users about AirTags or other item trackers moving with them and supports a manual scan. Follow the instructions for your device if you receive an alert.
