An image tint is a source color combined with an image’s pixels by a blend rule. The result depends on both colors, the chosen mode, and transparency—not just on placing a flat color over a picture. For a darkening tint, multiply is a common starting point; screen tends to lighten. In web code, choose the API according to which layers should interact: mix-blend-mode blends an element with its backdrop, background-blend-mode blends an element’s background layers, and SVG feBlend combines explicit filter inputs.

What a blend mode does to an image

A blend mode calculates a new color from a source (foreground) pixel and a backdrop (background) pixel. The calculation is applied channel by channel, typically to red, green, and blue. As MDN explains, a blend mode takes the foreground and background colors for each affected pixel, performs a calculation, and returns a new color value (MDN blend-mode reference).

For tinting, the source is often a solid color or colored layer and the backdrop is the image. Since the calculation uses both inputs, the image’s highlights, shadows, and color channels can affect the result. Different modes therefore create different visual effects from the same tint color.

How multiply and screen change the color

Multiply darkens

With normalized channel values from 0 to 1 and fully opaque inputs, multiply is Cb * Cs, where Cb is the backdrop channel and Cs is the source channel. Multiplying by black (0) produces black; multiplying by white (1) leaves the backdrop channel unchanged. A colored source can darken the image while retaining tonal variation.

Screen lightens

Screen is Cb + Cs - Cb * Cs in the same opaque, normalized case. It is the lightening counterpart to multiply: black leaves the backdrop unchanged, while white produces white. It can be useful when the source color should brighten rather than darken the image. The equations are described in the W3C SVG 1.1 filter specification and the MDN blend-mode reference.

Other useful modes

  • Normal: an opaque source replaces the backdrop; transparent source pixels allow the backdrop to show through.
  • Overlay: uses a multiply-like result for darker backdrop values and a screen-like result for lighter ones.
  • Darken and lighten: select the darker or lighter channel result, respectively.

These modes are not interchangeable tint presets. Pick by the behavior you want, then evaluate the result against representative image colors and transparency.

Try the channel math in JavaScript

The following functions implement multiply and screen for one normalized channel. Apply the chosen function separately to the red, green, and blue channels of an RGB pixel.

const multiply = (Cb, Cs) => Cb * Cs;
const screen = (Cb, Cs) => Cb + Cs - Cb * Cs;

For 8-bit channel values, divide each input by 255 before applying the function, then multiply the result by 255 and round to return to the 0–255 range. This example assumes fully opaque inputs. It is deliberately not a complete substitute for browser or SVG compositing: handling transparency requires alpha-aware equations, and APIs can also differ in color handling and input conventions.

Why alpha changes the result

When either input is partially transparent, the output depends on both the blend calculation and the inputs’ opacities. The W3C SVG 1.1 specification expresses colors as premultiplied inputs, with source opacity qa and backdrop opacity qb. Its output opacity is qr = 1 - (1-qa)*(1-qb). For multiply, the resulting premultiplied color is cr = (1-qa)*cb + (1-qb)*ca + ca*cb; for screen it is cr = cb + ca - ca*cb. Here ca and cb are the premultiplied input colors.

The simpler channel functions above are the fully opaque special case, not general alpha compositors. If a custom implementation must match a rendering API with transparent pixels, use that API’s documented compositing behavior rather than applying the opaque functions to unadjusted RGB values.

Choose the web API by the layers you want to blend

Blend an element with content behind it

Use CSS mix-blend-mode when an element—such as an image or colored overlay—should blend with its backdrop. The backdrop is determined within the same stacking context. MDN demonstrates isolation: isolate as a way to constrain the blending context; use it when the blend should be limited to a particular group of content. See the MDN mix-blend-mode reference.

Blend an element’s background layers

Use background-blend-mode when the layers to combine are the element’s own backgrounds—for example, its background image and background color. This is distinct from blending the element’s content with what is behind the element. The blend-mode values and their behavior are covered in the MDN blend-mode reference.

Blend explicit inputs in an SVG filter

Use SVG feBlend when building a filter pipeline in which the source graphic and another input are explicitly identified. SVG 1.1 lists normal, multiply, screen, darken, and lighten for this primitive. Its specification notes that normal blending is equivalent to an “over” operation on the feComposite filter primitive (W3C SVG 1.1 filters).

Use an image API when processing pixels directly

Native image libraries may describe the inputs as source and destination rather than foreground and backdrop. Apple’s vImage reference documents separate blend-mode functions and identifies multiply as the product of corresponding source pixels (Apple Accelerate: compositing images with vImage blend modes). Do not assume that matching mode names alone guarantees identical alpha or color-space behavior between APIs.

Diagnose a blend that looks different than expected

  • The tint darkens when you wanted to brighten: try screen rather than multiply, then judge it against the actual image.
  • The blend affects more of the page than intended: check the element’s stacking context and consider isolating the intended group with isolation: isolate.
  • A background blend does not interact with page content: confirm that you used background-blend-mode for background layers or mix-blend-mode for element content and its backdrop, as appropriate.
  • Your JavaScript result differs around transparent pixels: the short channel functions assume opaque inputs; use alpha-aware compositing rather than treating them as a complete renderer.
  • The same mode looks different in another API: compare which layers are blended, how alpha is represented, which modes are available, and how dark, light, and transparent pixels behave. The cited references do not establish an exhaustive cross-platform color-space or browser-conformance matrix, so verify the target rendering context rather than assuming exact equivalence.
