Eyesharvester is a Python 3 reconnaissance tool documented to discover IP cameras, DVRs, and NVRs across an IP range, optionally check a limited set of default credentials, and produce hardening guidance. It uses active network probes, so run it only against devices and networks you own or are explicitly authorized to assess. Treat its identifications and vulnerability matches as leads to verify—not proof that a device is compromised or exploitable.
What Eyesharvester does
The Eyesharvester project describes the tool as a single-file Python 3 program that uses the standard library and has no dependencies. Its documented workflow scans surveillance-relevant ports, then looks for device signals through HTTP(S), RTSP, ONVIF, and vendor DVRIP. The project also documents confidence filtering and structured JSON output. These are project-described capabilities, not independently verified measures of detection accuracy.
Three functions define its defensive-audit use:
- Discovery: identify hosts that may be IP cameras, DVRs, or NVRs within a specified IP range.
- Optional credential checks: use
--check-credsto try a limited set of default credential combinations against hosts already identified as camera or recorder devices. - Optional hardening guidance: use
--hardento associate recognized vendors with critical CVEs and remediation guidance.

Set an authorized scope before scanning
Define the approved IP range and the systems included in the assessment before running the tool. The documented workflow includes active scanning, login attempts when credential checking is enabled, and version probing. Those actions should be covered by your authorization and operational plan.

The Eyesharvester README warns: “Active scanning, login attempts, and version probing against networks you do not own or have written permission to test is illegal in most jurisdictions.” This is the project’s warning, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. If you are working for an organization or client, confirm written permission, scope, timing, and any restrictions on login attempts with the responsible authority.
Run the documented audit workflow
- Confirm the target range and permission. Include only addresses explicitly covered by your authorization; do not broaden the range based on what the scan discovers.
- Review the README for the current command syntax. The repository documents the tool’s options, but the available source does not establish an exact command line or a fixed invocation for every environment. Follow the instructions for the version you have obtained.
- Run discovery against the approved range. The documented process checks surveillance-relevant ports and fingerprints likely devices through HTTP(S), RTSP, ONVIF, and DVRIP signals.
- Enable credential checks only when appropriate. The optional
--check-credsmode attempts a limited set of default combinations against identified devices. Treat it as an active login test and ensure that this action is explicitly permitted. - Review findings as candidates, then verify them. Use the output and any hardening guidance to identify devices that need attention. Confirm device identity, exact firmware, and current vendor advisories before deciding that a vulnerability applies.
How to interpret detections and CVE matches
The project cautions that vendor and version extraction is heuristic and can be spoofed. A fingerprint is therefore an identification lead, not definitive proof of a device’s manufacturer or firmware. Likewise, the project’s CVE table is vendor-level rather than exact-firmware-level. A vendor match alone does not establish that a particular device is affected, vulnerable in its configuration, or exploitable.

For each finding, check the device’s precise model and firmware against the vendor’s current PSIRT information or security advisories. Record what the scan detected separately from what the device and vendor documentation confirm. Do not describe a detection as evidence of compromise unless you have separate evidence of unauthorized access.

The README’s remediation guidance includes firmware updates, removing default credentials, network isolation or VPN access, disabling unnecessary services, and firewall restrictions. These are project-provided checklist items; assess each against the device’s capabilities, operational requirements, and the vendor’s recommendations rather than applying every measure identically.

- Check for a supported firmware update and verify the appropriate release with the vendor.
- Replace default credentials with unique credentials supported by the device.
- Restrict access to the camera or recorder network; consider isolation or VPN-only access where suitable.
- Disable services the device does not need, taking care not to disrupt required monitoring or management.
- Use firewall rules to limit connections to authorized systems and services.
What a successful scan does—and does not—tell you
A scan can help inventory likely surveillance devices and surface issues worth investigating. It does not, by itself, prove that every device was found, that an identification is accurate, that a listed CVE affects the installed firmware, or that a device has been compromised. Use Eyesharvester as one part of a scoped defensive audit, then validate important findings against the device and its vendor’s current security information.
