A brief Bitcoin rebound is not enough to establish a bull market. Look for a lasting improvement in the long-term price trend, a stronger position relative to holder cost-basis measures, and participation that supports the move. Several indicators agreeing over time make the bull-market case more credible, but none can confirm it with certainty.
What separates a recovery from a bull market?
A short-term recovery is a price rebound that may occur within a broader downtrend. It can push Bitcoin above a moving average or produce several strong sessions without changing the longer-term pattern. A bull-market interpretation becomes more plausible when the improvement persists and other measures—such as holder cost basis and market participation—also strengthen.
There is no universally accepted threshold that declares a bull market. CoinGecko, for example, uses its own historical methodology: it identifies a bull episode when Bitcoin’s daily closes stay above the 200-day moving average for at least 30 consecutive days. That is a publisher-defined rule, not an industry-wide standard. CoinGecko’s methodology is useful as a clear reference, not as a definitive test.
Check whether the price trend persists
Use the 200-day moving average as context
The 200-day moving average smooths daily price fluctuations to show a longer-term trend. A brief move above it can be part of a recovery; sustained daily closes above it provide stronger evidence that the trend has improved. Because the average responds to past prices, it is a lagging indicator: it can help describe what has happened, but it does not predict the next move.

Compare the 50-day average, but do not rely on a cross alone
The 50-day average gives a shorter-term view. Comparing it with the 200-day average can help show whether recent momentum is improving, but a moving-average cross is not proof of a new cycle. Fidelity Digital Assets discusses both averages in its Q1 2025 market report; the report treats technical measures as context rather than a guarantee. Read Fidelity Digital Assets’ Q1 2025 review.
Check whether Bitcoin has improved against holder cost basis
Realized price is an on-chain estimate of the average price at which coins last moved. It can serve as an aggregate cost-basis reference. Short-term-holder cost basis focuses on a recent-holder cohort; Fidelity describes these holders as often having held for fewer than 155 days. If Bitcoin reclaims and holds above relevant cost-basis levels, newer participants may be less underwater. That supports a recovery interpretation, but does not establish a bull market on its own.
Keep dated figures in perspective. Fidelity Digital Assets reported realized price at about $44,000 at the close of Q1 2025. In institutional commentary, Fidelity reported a short-term-holder cost basis of $81,339 and an all-ETP cost basis of $83,296 on April 9, 2026. These are historical snapshots, not current levels; cost-basis estimates vary by measure and date. Fidelity’s Q1 2025 report and its April 2026 market commentary describe the figures and context.

Volume and flows can help show whether demand is supporting a rebound. Rising price accompanied by improving trading volume and fund flows is more persuasive than a price move with weak or fading participation. But there is no fixed volume or flow threshold that proves a bull market, and these measures can give mixed signals.

Fidelity’s April 2026 commentary noted weak spot and ETP trading volume during an earlier bounce. Glassnode’s May 2026 report examined ETF flows and changes in realized capital in its discussion of recovery conditions. These are examples of supporting context, not rules that can be applied as universal cutoffs. Fidelity’s April 2026 commentary and Glassnode’s May 2026 report provide their respective analyses.
Compare the signals side by side
| Signal | More consistent with a brief recovery | More supportive of a bull-market interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Price trend | A brief move above a trend line, or a pattern that continues to form lower highs. | Sustained daily closes above the 200-day average. CoinGecko’s published example requires 30 consecutive days; that is its methodology, not a consensus rule. |
| Holder cost basis | Price remains below relevant recent-holder or aggregate cost-basis levels. | Price reclaims and holds above relevant cost-basis levels. |
| Participation | Trading volume or flows are weak or fading. | Volume and flows improve alongside price. |
| Confidence | One or two isolated signals improve. | Several indicators agree over time, while uncertainty remains. |
This comparison is a practical framework synthesized from the cited methodologies and reports, not a validated scoring model. Moving averages, cost-basis measures, and flows describe different aspects of the market; they can disagree without one automatically invalidating the others.

Use historical bull-market duration carefully
CoinGecko reported that its 10 completed historical bull episodes averaged 237 days, using data through September 21, 2026. The average excludes the ongoing episode under its methodology. It describes past episodes; it does not forecast how long a future or ongoing market phase will last. CoinGecko’s report explains the calculation.

The indicators and dated examples here do not establish Bitcoin’s live market regime on October 7, 2026. To assess the market on a particular day, inspect current price history, the relevant moving averages, current cost-basis estimates, and recent volume and flows. Label each figure with its publisher, date, and methodology; do not substitute an older snapshot for a current reading.

Even when the signals align, the conclusion remains probabilistic. Fidelity Digital Assets’ Q1 2025 report puts the limitation plainly: “Past performance does not predict future results.”
