The strongest clue is where the wood was found: archaeological wood can survive in a marsh, lake, river, coastal deposit, or below the permanent water table when it stays wet and has little exposure to oxygen. Its shape or surface details may also have survived, but appearance alone cannot establish that a piece is ancient, identify its species, or show how well it is preserved. If you have just exposed a possible archaeological find, keep it wet and contact an archaeological authority or an experienced conservator.
What waterlogged preservation means
Historic England describes waterlogged archaeological wood as a rare source of evidence about past environments and human activity. It can come from coastal waters, rivers, lakes, marshes, or archaeological features such as wells that extend below the permanent water table. The essential conditions are persistent saturation and limited oxygen.
Bacteria and fungi can still break down wood in these environments, but degradation is slower than in air or well-aerated soil. As organisms create cavities and tunnels in the wood, surrounding water fills the voids. That water can help the object retain its overall form and preserve surface features such as tool marks or carvings. Waterlogged does not mean decay-free or unchanged.

Find context
A recorded find from a deposit that remained saturated is the most useful clue. A marsh, lake, river, coastal deposit, or waterlogged archaeological feature is consistent with the conditions that can preserve wood. Context does not, by itself, prove the object’s age or preservation history.

- HUMIDITY SENSOR: Our handy meter tool can quickly determine what level of remediation is needed to keep your family safe from black mold. High levels of dampness that go untreated are the leading cause of harmful fungus growth in the home.
- WATER LEAK DETECTOR: Finding the moisture content in your wood or drywall is the first step in early prevention. Continuously check and test suspicious water stains around the house so you can determine whether the area is wet or has already dried. Low, medium and high moisture tones and on-screen icons, Reading HOLD button
- MOISTURE READER: The mold test features large 0.3" high digits in a backlit LCD for quick and easy detecting. Our mildew scanner includes extra 8mm stainless steel pins, a protective cap that doubles as a calibration checker, and a “9V” battery.
- MOLD TESTER: For an accurate test read, stick the stainless steel pins into the surface of what you're measuring. The gauge has a broad range of 5 - 50% for wood and 1.5 - 33% for building materials such as concrete and drywall.
- GENERAL TOOLS: We're a recognized leader in designing and developing specialized precision tools dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service. We encourage artisans and DIYers to work smarter, measure better, and repair more productively.
Shape and surface detail
Retained form, tool marks, or carvings can be consistent with waterlogged preservation because water fills voids in degraded wood. Those features are not an authentication test: they cannot establish that the object is ancient or tell you its species.
Appearance is not a reliable standalone test
Do not rely on softness, color, density, or any one visual impression to identify ancient waterlogged wood. Preservation can be poor or uneven, and compression can make identification difficult. At Glastonbury Lake Village, some wood identifications were difficult or impossible because of compression and poor preservation.

- FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
- CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR — Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
- CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
- PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
- ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.
What to do if suspected wood has been exposed
- Keep it wet. Avoid letting the wood dry while you seek advice. Historic England warns that evaporation and surface tension during uncontrolled drying can cause splitting, twisting, shrinkage, cracking, or total disintegration.
- Contact the appropriate specialist. For material that may be archaeological, contact the relevant archaeological authority or a suitably experienced conservator. Reporting requirements vary by jurisdiction; Historic England’s guidance is for English heritage contexts.
- Do not attempt a DIY treatment. Avoid improvised cleaning, drying, or conservation. Historic England’s 2025 guidance describes a process that can include excavation, recording, sampling, temporary storage, assessment, analysis, conservation, and curation, and says it does not replace specialist advice.
- Leave treatment decisions to a qualified conservator. Recording, sampling—for example, for species identification—and analysis should be completed before conservation begins. A suitably experienced and accredited conservator should select and carry out treatment.
How professionals assess waterlogged wood
Assessment may draw on the archaeological context and records, documentation of the object, sampling, wood identification, and analytical methods selected to answer the project’s specific questions. No single visual clue settles age, species, or condition.

When discussing an assessment, ask what question each method will answer, what information it will produce, and whether the conservator has relevant experience and accreditation.

Why one reburial study is not a general rule
Historic England’s 2018 reburial report describes a case study in which archaeological timbers were buried at a selected wetland site and retrieved after three years. The results were consistent with minimal impact over that relatively short test period. At the site, the burial environment was highly reduced, pH and electrical conductivity were relatively stable, and the water table remained above the timbers.
This is evidence about that test site and period, not a universal preservation threshold, recommended storage period, or guarantee that reburial will protect wood elsewhere.
