Check your laptop’s exact model documentation to confirm that the specific USB-C port accepts charging, then match the laptop’s USB Power Delivery (USB PD) input requirements to the charger’s output and the cable’s power rating. A USB-C connector that fits does not, by itself, mean the port can charge the laptop or that the charger supplies enough power.
Check whether your laptop’s USB-C port accepts charging
- Find the full model or product number. Use the exact identifier printed on the laptop or shown in system information, rather than relying on a broad product-family name.
- Open the matching manufacturer’s manual or specifications. Confirm that the particular USB-C port supports power input, charging, or USB Power Delivery. A laptop can have multiple USB-C ports with different capabilities. Dell documents port-power differences on some Latitude and Precision models, while Lenovo identifies a specific Power Delivery port on its cited Legion model: Dell product manuals and Lenovo support.
If the manufacturer’s documentation does not say that a port accepts charging input, do not assume it does based on the connector shape alone.
Match the laptop’s power requirements to the charger
Look up the exact laptop’s USB-C charging requirements. Check for USB PD support, required voltage, minimum wattage, and any recommended wattage for faster charging. Then inspect the charger’s listed USB PD output profiles: it must offer a compatible voltage and enough power for the laptop. The largest wattage printed on a charger is not sufficient evidence on its own; the relevant output profile must match what the laptop can use.

Lenovo’s guidance for the ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 describes USB-C power input of at least 20 V and 2.25 A in the scenarios covered on its model page. That is a model-specific example, not a universal USB-C laptop requirement: Lenovo ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 guidance.
LG likewise gives a 10 W (5 V / 2 A) or higher Power Delivery threshold for the charging scenario described on its support page. This applies to LG’s stated scenario and should not be treated as a general laptop minimum: LG PC charging guidance.

Check that the cable can carry the required power
A suitable charger can still be paired with a cable that limits charging. Verify that the cable’s stated power rating is sufficient for the charging level you intend to use; Microsoft lists an inadequate cable as one possible cause of charging problems. For charging above 100 W, Plugable’s guidance calls for USB PD 3.1 Extended Power Range (EPR) support in both the laptop and charger, plus an EPR-rated cable: Plugable’s USB PD 3.1 EPR guidance.

A cable marked 240 W does not make a laptop draw 240 W. The laptop and charger negotiate a charging level supported by the devices and cable.

Understand what happens if the charger is underpowered
A charger that provides less power than the laptop needs may charge slowly, fail to keep up while the laptop is running, or allow the battery to discharge even though the charger is connected. Microsoft notes that insufficient charger output or an inadequate cable can cause slow charging or discharging while plugged in: Microsoft guidance for slow charging and power warnings.
Behavior differs by model. Lenovo says that with its cited Legion model, insufficient power can mean slower charging or operation below full capacity: Lenovo Legion USB-C power guidance.

Troubleshoot slow charging, power warnings, or connection cycling
- Confirm the port. Check the exact laptop model’s documentation again to ensure the connected port accepts charging input.
- Compare output with the laptop requirement. Verify the charger’s compatible USB PD voltage and wattage, not merely its advertised maximum.
- Check the cable rating. Make sure the cable supports the intended power level and is suitable for the charger’s and laptop’s charging capabilities.
- Try the manufacturer-recommended adapter if uncertainty remains. Microsoft recommends using the charger designed for the PC when needed. MSI says inadequate adapter or power-bank output, or an unrated cable, can cause charging failures or repeated connection cycling on notebooks that support USB-C PD charging: MSI USB-C charging guidance.
Choose between chargers that meet the requirements
If more than one charger meets the laptop’s documented requirements, compare the details that affect your use:

- Cable rating: check whether the cable is included and whether it supports the intended power level.
- Model-specific support: follow the laptop maker’s guidance, especially for higher-power charging or ports with different capabilities.
- Where you will charge: use a wall charger for routine charging. Consider a USB-C PD power bank only if the laptop supports charging from one and you need portable power; MSI notes that requirements vary between supported notebooks.
Apple says that a Mac that charges over USB-C can use a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery. For a Mac or any other laptop, check the exact model’s charging documentation rather than assuming every USB-C power source is suitable: Apple guidance on USB-C charging for Mac laptops.
