Before buying a Steam game, check whether its play style suits you, what recent players repeatedly report, whether it fits your PC or Steam Deck, and whether the current price feels worth the remaining uncertainty. Steam’s score and badges are useful clues, not guarantees of quality, performance, or personal enjoyment.
Start with what you want from the game
Decide what would make the game a good fit for you before you look at its overall score. Consider genre, pace, difficulty, single-player or multiplayer, narrative style, and whether you are comfortable with Early Access or ongoing development.

Then compare those preferences with the Steam store page’s short description, tags, screenshots, and videos. A game can be popular and still be a poor match for your preferred pace or style. The useful question is not just whether players like it, but whether their reasons for liking it—or disliking it—matter to you.

Use the overall review summary as a starting point, then read written reviews that discuss the features you care about. Look for repeated, concrete observations: crashes, confusing progression, server problems, performance issues, or strong replay value. A pattern across reviews is more informative than treating one vivid complaint or one enthusiastic recommendation as decisive.

Pay attention to review dates and, when shown, the reviewer’s playtime. A review from an earlier build may not reflect the current game. Steam provides review controls, including date-range and playtime-related filters in the store interface; these can help surface more relevant accounts, but reviewers may have different hardware, preferences, and game versions than you.
Steam says only reviews from players who purchased a game through Steam count toward its review score. Its review display also uses an information-detection system and helpfulness votes to select individual reviews. These are useful platform signals, not a representative survey tailored to your tastes. Steam’s refund and review information explains the platform’s policies; the store page itself is where you can inspect a specific game’s review summary and written reviews.

Check whether your device can run it
Open the game’s Steam store page and check its supported operating systems and hardware requirements. Steam Support recommends checking both operating-system compatibility and hardware. Compare the listed requirements with your own system rather than assuming that a game will work well because your device meets a minimum specification. Minimum requirements do not promise a particular frame rate or visual quality on every configuration. Steam Support: checking system requirements.
If you plan to play on Steam Deck
Check the compatibility label and read its details on the store page or in your library. Valve defines Verified titles as meeting its compatibility criteria. Playable means the game works but may require manual configuration, so decide whether that setup is acceptable to you. Compatibility reviews are ongoing; check again if the game or platform has changed since you last looked. Check the game’s release and development status
Confirm whether the game is fully released, in Early Access, or otherwise still in active development. For a game that is not finished, read the developer’s store-page description and stated plans, along with any caveats about its current state. Treat those plans as context for your decision, not as a guarantee of what the finished game will contain.
Use price to manage uncertainty
Compare the current price with your budget and how confident you are after checking fit, reviews, and compatibility. If important questions remain or the evidence is mixed, waiting for a sale is a reasonable option. A lower price does not resolve doubts about performance or whether you will enjoy the game, but it can reduce the amount you are committing while those doubts remain.

Know the refund terms before you buy
For Steam games and software, Valve’s standard refund terms allow a request within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. Requests outside those conditions can still be submitted, but Valve reviews them and does not guarantee approval. Consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights for faulty games. Read Steam’s current refund policy before relying on a refund.

Do not assume the standard rule applies to every transaction. Valve says purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys and Steam Wallet cards, cannot be refunded through Steam. Pre-release titles, DLC, in-game purchases, subscriptions, gifts, and bundles have separate terms. If you buy, keep track of the purchase date and your playtime so you can assess whether the standard conditions still apply.
