Check the game’s current Steam store page: Coming Soon means it is not yet available to buy or play; Early Access means you can play its in-development version now; and a fully released game has launched through Steam’s full-release process. A “Coming Soon” label does not tell you when the game will launch.
What each Steam release label means
| What the page says | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Coming Soon | The public store listing is for an upcoming game. Customers cannot purchase or play it in this state. The developer may choose not to show a release date. | Wishlist the game if you want to track it, and check the store page or developer announcements for updates. |
| Coming Soon to Early Access | The game is still unreleased, and its announced first Steam release is intended to be an Early Access launch. A Steam store-page example for Game Store Simulator displays both “Release Date: Coming soon” and “Coming Soon To Early Access.” | Treat it as unavailable until its listing changes; evaluate the playable version when it launches. |
| Early Access | The game is released in an in-development state and is playable now. You buy access to the current version, which may change through updates. | Review the current build, features, and recent developer updates before buying. |
| Fully released | The developer has used Steam’s full-release process. Steam says this makes the product immediately playable and displays it as fully released. | Check the live page for the game’s purchase and access details, edition, and system requirements. |
Does “Coming Soon” mean the game releases soon?
No. On Steam, “Coming Soon” can mean the developer has not chosen to display a player-facing release date. Developers can display an exact date, a month and year, a quarter, a year, or “Coming Soon.” The label does not reveal a hidden countdown or let you infer the exact launch date. See Steamworks’ release-date guidance.

Valve requires a new product’s Coming Soon page to be live for at least two weeks before release. That is a minimum storefront requirement, not a prediction that any particular game will launch in two weeks. Steamworks explains the Coming Soon page requirements.

Can you play a Steam game in Early Access?
Yes. Early Access is a purchase of a playable game in its current, in-development form—not a preorder for a game that is unavailable. Steam’s Early Access guide says buyers gain immediate access to download and play the game as it evolves.

The current game may change as development continues, and the developer decides when it is ready for full release. A planned timeline is not a guarantee of completion: Valve cautions that some development teams may be unable to finish their games. Early Access games do not all follow the same schedule or reach a full release.
What to check before buying an Early Access game
Judge the version you can play today rather than relying on promises about a future build. Steam recommends considering what the game is like now and how often it is updated.

- Look at current screenshots and videos to assess the present experience.
- Read recent developer announcements on the store page for signs of development activity and the substance of updates.
- Check which features are available now, not only which ones are planned.
- If the current version does not appeal to you, wait for an update rather than buying on the assumption that the game will become something different.
How to confirm a particular game’s current status
Open that game’s live Steam store page and read its release-status and date area. Store states can change, so an old article, screenshot, or announcement may no longer reflect availability. Steam’s documentation describes the platform’s release workflow: Coming Soon pages are upcoming listings without a purchase or play option, Early Access launches provide access to the current build, and a full release makes the product playable as fully released. See Steamworks’ release options.
