A black Samsung TV screen with sound does not by itself prove that the backlight or power supply has failed. First check whether the TV can display its Home or Menu screen and rule out a source, cable, or connected-device problem. If the screen stays dark, a flashlight test can indicate a backlight-system fault—but it cannot identify which internal part needs repair.
Start by checking whether the TV can display its menu
Press Home or Menu on the Samsung remote. If the on-screen menu appears, the TV is powered on. The problem may instead be the selected source, a missing signal, or an external device. Samsung explains that an appearing menu means the TV may be on the wrong source or not receiving a signal: Samsung US support.
Check that the connected device is powered on and that the TV is set to its input. Reconnect the cable at both ends, then try another HDMI port, cable, or external device. Some Samsung models include an HDMI cable test; availability and instructions vary by model, so use the guidance for your set. Samsung’s Philippines support also recommends checking the menu, supported HDMI cable tests, and other external devices before requesting service: Samsung Philippines support.
Use a flashlight to look for a faint picture
In a dim room, hold a flashlight close to the screen and look carefully for a faint menu or image. A visible faint picture suggests the backlight system is not illuminating the screen normally. It does not distinguish among failed LED strips, the power supply or LED-driver circuitry, or backlight control circuitry. A lack of a visible faint picture also does not prove that the power supply board is faulty.

This is a clue rather than a definitive test. iFixit describes the flashlight check as part of general TV troubleshooting, but component behavior and repair procedures can vary by model: iFixit backlight guide.
Read standby-light symptoms cautiously
A blinking standby light can point to a power-related problem, but it does not establish that the power supply board has failed. Likewise, a TV with no standby light may have a disconnected power supply, or it may be on while failing to display an image. Check that the power cord is seated and follow the external troubleshooting steps for the exact model before concluding that an internal part is defective.

Know when internal repair is not a safe next step
Opening a TV and testing its internal boards is not a casual consumer check. iFixit’s repair guidance warns that the power-supply area marked HOT contains appreciably higher voltages. Do not work on an opened, powered TV or try board-level tests unless you are trained, equipped, and comfortable with the risks. If the menu and external checks do not resolve the issue, Samsung advises requesting service; you can also contact a qualified TV repairer.

Do not buy LED strips or a power supply board based only on the symptom or the Samsung brand name. A repairer should confirm the failed component and match the part to the exact TV model; backlight strips may also depend on the panel, while a power board should match its board number as well as the TV. The title alone does not identify a model, panel revision, or board number, so it cannot support a responsible part recommendation.
