A sale is a good deal only if the exact item’s all-in price is competitive with credible recent and current offers, and its condition and terms work for you. A big discount badge alone does not prove that the price is unusually low.
Start by identifying the exact item
Before comparing prices, note the manufacturer, model number, and the details that affect what you are buying: size, color, configuration, and condition. A new item is not directly comparable to a refurbished one, and two products with similar names may have different specifications. The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends recording item and model details so you can compare like with like.
Check the price against its history and other sellers
Look for credible price history for the exact model, then compare the current offer with other sellers’ prices. Price alerts can help you notice a later change if you are not in a hurry. Comparison websites can be useful, but their rankings may reflect paid placement or promote the site’s own products. The FTC advises shoppers to use trustworthy comparison sources and understand how their results are ranked.

In its advice on going-out-of-business sales, the FTC warns that discounts based on MSRP may look substantial even when the sale price is higher than what stores typically charged before the sale. Its recommendation is simple: “Comparison shopping is your best bet.”

Calculate what you will actually pay
Compare the amount you must pay to receive the item—not only the headline price. Add shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other required fees. Check whether the advertised price requires a rebate, purchase of another product, membership, or other eligibility condition. The FTC recommends checking both total cost and the terms of an advertised deal; its advertising guidance says the same truthfulness standards apply to sale-price and price-comparison claims.
Read the condition, return policy, and seller terms
Read the full listing for condition labels such as “refurbished,” “vintage,” or “close-out.” These can signal that the item is not in the same condition as a new, regularly stocked product. Check whether the seller accepts returns, the return deadline, who pays return shipping, and whether a restocking fee applies. Clearance or sale items may have different policies. For liquidation sales, inspect goods carefully: the FTC notes that refunds or returns may not be allowed.

Use legal price tests only in their proper context
Price-advertising rules vary by jurisdiction, and their legal tests are not a universal shopper’s discount formula. The FTC’s U.S. guide on former-price comparisons says a former price can provide a legitimate basis for comparison when it was the actual, bona fide price at which the product was regularly offered for a reasonably substantial period. That is guidance about advertising claims, not proof that any particular sale is a bargain.

Canada’s Competition Bureau describes two ways businesses can substantiate an ordinary selling price claim: more than 50% of sales at the claimed ordinary price or higher within a reasonable period, usually within a year; or offering the product at that price in good faith for a substantial period, usually within a year, immediately before or after the promotion. These are Canadian criteria for assessing a business’s claim, not a price threshold shoppers should apply worldwide. Neither test guarantees that a sale price is the best available.

Make the buy-or-wait decision
Ask whether you would still want the item at this all-in price if the sale label disappeared. If it meets a real need, compares well with equivalent offers, and its condition and terms are acceptable, it may be worth buying. If the comparison basis is weak, the total is higher than it first appears, or you are buying only because the discount looks dramatic, compare further, wait, or pass. There is no universal percentage discount that makes an item a good deal.
