Check the exact game edition’s packaging and publisher information. For an original Nintendo Switch game, confirm the specific release rather than assuming every publisher uses the same disclosure. For Nintendo Switch 2, first check whether the package contains a standard game card or a game-key card: Nintendo says game-key cards do not contain the full game data and require a download.

Check the exact edition, not just the game title

A game may have different physical editions for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, and packaging can vary by region or release. Before deciding whether the game is on the card, note the full product name, platform, region and edition or SKU shown on the box or retailer listing. Do not use a newer edition’s packaging to infer what is on an older release.

  1. Identify the platform and edition. Confirm whether the listing is for Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 and record the precise edition or SKU.
  2. Inspect the physical package. Look for explicit download or game-key-card wording. For Switch 2, Nintendo says game-key cards are visibly distinct; its UK guidance notes a key icon at the top-right front of the card and says packaging states the storage space required. Nintendo UK’s game-key card guidance shows the identifying details.
  3. Read the publisher’s page for that release. Look for a direct statement about whether the base game is included, whether a download is required, and whether an internet connection is needed.
  4. Ask if the information is unclear. Request confirmation from the publisher or retailer for the exact edition or SKU, and keep the answer or a clear package image.

Know which kind of card the package contains

Format What the card contains What to verify
Nintendo Switch game card Nintendo’s cited guidance does not establish a universal rule proving that every original Switch card contains the complete base game. Nintendo Japan says Switch software does not use the game-key-card format. Check the exact edition’s packaging and publisher information. Konami Support, in an answer dated August 29, 2022, says its physical cartridges contain the games and do not require a download or online connection; that statement applies to Konami’s answer, not every publisher. Konami Support’s statement.
Nintendo Switch 2 standard game card Nintendo says Switch 2 supports standard game cards as well as game-key cards. The package type matters; the word “physical” alone does not establish which format it is. Inspect the package and confirm the card type for the specific edition. Nintendo Support’s Switch 2 FAQ.
Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card The card is a key to download the game, not the full game data. Nintendo says an internet connection and enough system or microSD Express storage are needed for the download. The card must remain available to play; Nintendo UK says later starts can work offline. Look for the key-card marking, download wording and stated storage space. Nintendo Support’s Switch 2 FAQ and Nintendo UK’s instructions.

Nintendo Japan’s platform guidance says game-key cards are for Switch 2 software, not Nintendo Switch software. Nintendo Japan’s Switch 2 transition guidance.

Separate the base game from updates, DLC and online play

“Is the full game on the cartridge?” and “Do I need to download anything?” are related but different questions. A regular game card may contain the base game while a later update or additional content still needs to be downloaded. Nintendo says update data and additional content require internet for download, and online play requires a connection. Those requirements alone do not mean the base game is missing from a standard card. Nintendo Support’s information on updates, additional content and online play.

Super Mario RPG - Nintendo Switch (US Version)
  • Jump through a colorful world and give attacks some extra oomph in battle!
  • Explore the vibrant environments with your party and jump towards your next goal!
  • Run into monsters to enter turn-based battles with your party of three.
  • Press the button at the right time for a satisfying dose of extra damage or helpful guard.

For a game-key card, the first download is required to obtain the game data. After downloading, the card remains necessary to play, though Nintendo UK says subsequent starts can be offline. Check the specific game’s online features separately if you want to play multiplayer or use other connected services.

Do not confuse a digital bundle with cartridge contents

A bundle can include the full game as a digital download without putting game data on a cartridge. Nintendo’s 2024 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle for Switch and Switch OLED, for example, includes a full-game download registered through Nintendo eShop. That is a digital inclusion, not evidence about cartridge contents. Nintendo’s bundle listing.

Questions to ask before buying

  • Is this the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 edition, and does the listing match the physical package?
  • Is the Switch 2 format a standard game card or a game-key card?
  • Does the publisher confirm that the base game is on the card, or say that a download is required?
  • If a download is required, how much storage does the package or publisher specify?
  • Are updates, additional content or online features separate from the base game?

Nintendo’s cited sources distinguish Switch 2 game-key cards from standard cards, but they do not establish a universal label or disclosure convention for every original Switch title, publisher, region and edition. No industry-wide percentage for how much of a typical Switch game is stored on its card is established by these sources, so an exact-edition check is the reliable approach.
