To tell whether a new Dragon Ball Legends character fits, check whether its Z Ability benefits your intended battle core, whether it receives that core’s buffs, and whether its kit fills a real role without weakening the lineup elsewhere. In standard battles, you pick three fighters from a party of six, so evaluate the three you expect to field—not just the character’s rarity or headline abilities.
Start with the three fighters you intend to use
First decide what the team is meant to do and which three characters are its battle core. Standard battles use three fighters selected from a six-character party, but rules can differ by mode. Check the rules for the mode you care about before judging whether a character belongs in a particular slot. The official battle guide says to start by choosing three characters for battle.
Also identify what the core needs: damage, defense, support, disruption, healing, or survival. This gives you a practical test for the new unit: does it strengthen the plan, or merely add another character you like?
Check the exact Z Ability targets
Bandai Namco’s advice is to build a party around Z Abilities. Open character details and compare each ability’s stated targets with the Tags or Episodes of the other core members. A shared series, faction, or broad theme is not enough by itself: the ability must explicitly target the relevant Tag or Episode, and its level may affect which targets or bonuses apply. The Party Formation filters can help find characters by Tag or Episode. Bandai Namco’s party-building FAQ describes this approach.

- Dragon Ball Evolve delivers a high-quality figure created to look exactly like your favorite character from the popular anime series, Dragon Ball Super
- Each character in the Evolve series is approximately 5 inches tall with 27 points of articulation!
- Dragon Ball Super Evolve figures are so authentic and realistic you can recreate the epic battles and favorite moments from the anime

Evaluate support in both directions:
- Incoming support: Do the current core members’ Z Abilities benefit the new character?
- Outgoing support: Would adding the new character improve the Z Abilities reaching the other two fighters you plan to use?
- Ability level: Does the relevant target or added stat bonus apply at the new character’s current Z Ability level?
A character may be useful in battle even without perfect coverage, but a mismatch can mean its team-building value is lower than its profile initially suggests.
Read the whole kit and its activation conditions
Z Ability coverage is only one part of fit. Read the battle kit for what the character actually contributes, then check the conditions required to activate those effects. Look for a role the core needs: damage, defense, healing, disruption, cover changes, revival or endurance mechanics, or ally support. A strong effect that rarely meets its trigger in your mode or lineup may contribute less than a less flashy, reliable tool.

Example: Super Saiyan God SS Vegeta
In the official profile dated October 6, 2026, Super Saiyan God SS Vegeta has the Tags Vegeta Clan, Saiyan, Future, God Ki, and Super Saiyan God SS, and the “Future” Trunks Saga (S) Episode. At Z Ability II, the profile says he buffs Vegeta Clan, Saiyan, and Future; at Z Ability III, it adds base Blast Defense for Vegeta Clan. His described kit includes a Unique Gauge that enhances Arts, an Ultimate Arts draw interaction, and Endurance conditions. This illustrates why both the ability targets and their level matter: a team can share one of his Tags without receiving every listed bonus. See the official Vegeta profile.

The official profile dated September 22, 2026 lists Frieza Force, Transforming Warrior, Lineage of Evil, and Powerful Opponent, with the Frieza Saga (Z) Episode. At Z Ability II, it says the character buffs Lineage of Evil, Powerful Opponent, and Frieza Force; at Z Ability III, it adds base Strike Defense for Lineage of Evil. The profile also describes standby support, ally Main Ability seal removal when a gauge condition is met, and defensive and disruptive effects. A team should not assume that having a matching broad identity grants every benefit—the exact ability targets, level, and activation condition determine what applies. See the official Frieza profile.

Compare the new character with the one it would replace
Assess the swap against what your current lineup already does. A newcomer may improve one matchup or add a needed role, while weakening shared buffs, durability, or coverage in the other two battle selections. Compare the candidates on the same points:

| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Z Ability coverage | Which character’s targets and level bonuses benefit more of the intended core? |
| Kit and conditions | Which one supplies the needed role more reliably under its activation requirements? |
| Mode and selection | Which one works better with the mode’s rules and the three fighters you expect to select? |
| Cost of the swap | What shared buffs, durability, or role coverage would be lost by removing the current character? |
| Current evidence | What do current in-game details and relevant matchup evidence show for this mode? |
This is a decision framework, not a formal scoring system published by Bandai Namco. A popular character or a high-ranking party can provide a reference point, but popularity does not establish that a unit will work for every account, matchup, or mode.
