Check the product name printed on the sealed wrapper or its retail packaging: it should say “Play Booster” or “Collector Booster.” That label is the clearest way to identify the pack. If the name is missing or unreadable, check the exact set’s official product details; card counts and contents vary by release and are not a reliable universal test.
Check the printed product name first
Look on the wrapper or the packaging around it for “Play Booster” or “Collector Booster.” Wizards of the Coast lists these as separate products in its MTG Product Guide. Match the name alongside the set name, especially if you are checking a loose pack or older stock.
The broad distinction is intended use: Wizards describes Play Boosters as suitable for draft play or opening for fun, while Collector Boosters are aimed at collectors seeking premium cards and treatments. A Collector Booster does not guarantee a valuable pull.

If the label is obscured, compare the set name and product type with Wizards’ official materials for that release. The MTG Set Archive and the set’s product article can list Play Booster and Collector Booster contents separately.
#1 Best Overall
- The Foundations Play Booster Pack includes 15 cards.
Contents are not a dependable rule for identifying every pack. Wizards’ explanation of What Are Play Boosters? describes a general structure in the context of Murders at Karlov Manor and notes that details can change by set. For example, the Foundations product article lists 14 cards in each Play Booster and 15 in each Collector Booster for that release only. Do not apply those counts to other sets.

What if the product name is missing?
- Read the set name and look up that release in Wizards’ set archive or its official product article.
- Compare the pack’s printed product name and packaging with those official details. Treat card counts or foil contents as supporting clues, not proof.
- If the label is missing, obscured, or suspicious, ask a reputable game store. Wizards’ product information does not provide a comprehensive visual catalog for every wrapper, language, region, or historical print run, or a definitive method to authenticate an individual pack.
A naming change is planned for 2027
In an announcement dated October 5, 2026, Wizards said Play Boosters will be called “Booster Packs” starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first set of 2027. This is a planned change for new products, not a rename of existing stock; older wrappers may still say “Play Booster.” The announcement also describes a God Pack feature with a stated rate of 1 in every 300 Collector Boosters beginning with the 2027 changes. That rate is not an identification clue for ordinary packs. See Updating Our Boosters in 2027.
