You usually cannot tell from a leak’s location, timing, or visible signs whether nearby pipeline work caused it. If you suspect a gas leak, leave the area on foot and call 911 from a safe location. Tell the dispatcher what you observed and that work is nearby; let trained responders and the pipeline operator investigate the cause.

What to do first if you suspect a gas leak

  1. Leave immediately on foot. Move away from the suspected leak and affected area. Do not stop to investigate, approach workers or equipment, or gather details.
  2. Avoid anything that could ignite gas. Do not use a phone, operate electrical switches, start an engine, or create a flame while in the affected area.
  3. Call 911 from a safe location. Give the dispatcher the location, what you noticed, when it began, and that excavation or pipeline work is nearby, if known.
  4. Notify the pipeline operator if you know it. A nearby marker may identify the operator and its emergency number. Do not approach a marker or crew to get that information if doing so would take you toward the suspected leak.

PHMSA’s Pipeline Leak Recognition and What to Do guidance says to “Leave the area by foot immediately.” The operator dispatches trained personnel after notification; do not try to locate or repair the leak yourself.

Why timing and proximity cannot prove the cause

Excavation can damage a pipeline, with damage ranging from coating damage to punctures. But a leak noticed during nearby construction is not, by itself, evidence that the work caused it. A resident cannot reliably identify the source from distance, timing, or observation. Report what you noticed and leave the assessment to responders and the operator.

Pipeline markers provide approximate location and operator information; they do not show the pipe’s exact location or burial depth. A marker near a work area is useful context for the dispatcher, not proof that a particular crew struck a line.

PT520A Natural Gas Detector, Gas Leak Detector with 17-Inch Gooseneck, Locating The Source Like Propane, Methane, and Butane for Home and RV (Includes Battery x3) - Orange
  • Effective Gas Leak Detector: The TOPTES PT520A natural gas detector detects leaks of methane, propane, natural gas, LPG, butane, and more in tight spaces
  • Flexible Probe: The 17-inch gooseneck allows easy access to hard-to-reach areas like pipelines, storage tanks, gas fireplaces, and basements, ideal for both indoor and outdoor leak detection. During use, point the probe toward the suspected leak source and move as close as 1–5 cm
  • Visual and Audible Alarm: PT520A responds in 0.5 seconds, with 7 colored bars and a 75dB alarm that increase with gas concentration. Detection range: 50-10,000 ppm (Methane)
  • User-Friendly Functions: Enable or disable Auto Power-Off with the APO button to save power after 10 minutes of inactivity. The Mute button silences the alarm, and the non-slip, wear-resistant design ensures a secure, comfortable grip for easy handling
  • What You Get: 1×PT520A Gas Leak Detector, 3×AAA Batteries, 1×Protective Case, and 1×User Manual. Allow 30 seconds of warm-up in clean air before starting detection

Warning signs to report—not investigate

PHMSA lists these as possible signs of a pipeline leak:

  • A gas odor
  • Hissing or roaring sounds
  • Vapor or a cloud near the ground
  • Blowing dirt
  • Bubbling in wet areas
  • Fire
  • Dead or discolored vegetation

These clues do not identify the source. Some gas in transmission and gathering pipelines is odorless, so the absence of a familiar smell does not rule out a leak. If you suspect one, leave and call 911 rather than moving closer to confirm what you see or hear.

Call 911 for a suspected leak; call 811 before planned digging

These numbers serve different purposes:

Situation What to do Purpose
Suspected active gas leak Leave the area and call 911 from a safe location; notify the operator if known. Emergency response to a possible leak.
Planned excavation before work begins Call 811 and wait for underground facilities to be marked. Prevent damage during planned digging; not emergency leak reporting.

PHMSA explains emergency leak response in its leak guidance. The 811 service is for planned digging and utility marking. If work is already underway and you suspect a leak, do not wait for 811: move to safety and call 911.
