You usually can’t tell reliably from a voice line alone. Check the game’s credits, official disclosures, and developer documentation for evidence about that specific title and version. Unusual timing, repeated phrases, or an emotion that feels off may be clues to investigate, but they do not prove that AI generated the dialogue.
It also helps to ask three separate questions: who wrote the words, who performed or licensed the voice, and whether the line was recorded or generated. A game can combine human performances with AI-generated text or audio.
What “AI dialogue” can mean
The phrase “AI voice” can describe several different production choices. They are not interchangeable, and evidence for one does not establish another.
- Human-written, actor-recorded: A performer records dialogue written in advance.
- AI-generated speech: Written dialogue is converted into spoken audio by a speech model. The words may still have been written by a person.
- AI-generated dialogue: A system creates the words in response to a player, sometimes producing spoken audio as well.
- Digital replica: A performer’s licensed voice is used to generate additional speech. The performer may have recorded source material without recording every resulting line.
A game may use different approaches for different characters, scenes, platforms, or updates. A credited actor therefore does not necessarily establish that every line was recorded by that actor.

How to check a specific game
- Check the game’s official credits. Look in the end credits or official credits page for voice actors and other performance roles. This can establish credited work, but it does not by itself show how every line was produced or whether a voice was digitally replicated for additional dialogue.
- Search official disclosures and documentation. Check the developer or publisher’s FAQ, accessibility or AI disclosure pages, patch notes, and statements about dialogue systems. Look for explicit descriptions of generated dialogue, text-to-speech, voice replication, or live interaction.
- Match the evidence to the game you’re playing. Note the platform, region, update, and version. A prototype, mod, platform feature, or announcement about another project is not evidence about the retail game in question.
- Record the exact claim and its date. Distinguish what a developer says from what players infer, and whether the statement concerns the whole game or only a feature, character, or mode.
- Treat listening as a lead, not a verdict. Repetition, unusual pauses, pronunciation, or mismatched emotion can prompt further checking, but human performances and post-production can sound unusual too. Conversely, generated speech can be tuned to sound polished.
What strong evidence looks like
The clearest evidence is a title-specific statement from the developer or publisher, or official documentation that describes how the relevant dialogue feature works. For example, Epic’s announcement of UEFN Conversations describes NPCs that can respond without pre-authored dialogue trees. Epic wrote: “Instead of authoring dialogue trees for characters in your islands, conversations transforms an NPC into an AI-powered character capable of unscripted dialogue and interactions with players, like a quest giver or narrator.” Epic’s announcement says the system uses Google’s Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite to process audio inputs and generate text responses, then ElevenLabs to turn those responses into voiced output. Epic characterized the feature as experimental in the announcement and said creators would be able to publish islands using Conversations after a Beta release. That announcement documents a UEFN workflow; it does not establish the current availability of the feature or how unrelated games work.
Credits and performer contracts answer different questions. SAG-AFTRA’s page for its 2025 Interactive Media Agreement describes consent and disclosure requirements for AI digital-replica use among covered performers and employers. Its FAQ says intended-use descriptions may specify the character, context, dialogue, or gameplay, and that required project information includes whether a character will be used to create real-time generated dialogue. This is performer-facing contract information—not proof that every game must display a public AI label in its credits, or a way to identify how a particular line was made.

SAG-AFTRA’s broader AI guidance covers multiple agreements and sectors. For example, it discusses notice requirements for synthetic voices under the TV Animation agreement and explains that digital replicas can be based on distinctive character voices as well as natural speaking voices. Contract provisions depend on the agreement and who it covers; they should not be assumed to apply to every game or performer.

Keep reported disputes separate from confirmed production facts. In May 2025, the Associated Press reported that SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labor practice charge alleging that AI-generated Darth Vader voice use in Fortnite replaced bargaining-unit work without notice. AP also reported that Epic did not immediately respond to a request for comment at publication. This is a reported union allegation and dispute, not a court finding or a general rule about how games make dialogue. Read the AP report.

A quick checklist before you decide
- Does an official source describe the specific game’s dialogue or voice workflow?
- Does the evidence concern the same version, platform, and feature you are asking about?
- Does it say whether the words were generated, the audio was synthesized, or a performer’s voice was replicated?
- Is the claim a developer disclosure, a credited role, a union filing, or a player’s interpretation of how a line sounds?
- If the only evidence is an uncanny voice or repeated phrase, have you treated it as a clue rather than proof?
