Call your local emergency number if a football player has serious head-injury warning signs, a possible neck or spine injury, a severe fracture, heavy bleeding, trouble breathing, shock, or confusion, seizure, or unresponsiveness during exertion. For a suspected concussion without those danger signs, take the player out immediately, do not let them return that day, and arrange professional medical advice. This is triage guidance, not a diagnosis.
When to call emergency services now
After an injury, call the emergency number used where you are—for example, 999 in the UK or 911 in the US—if any of these signs are present. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
- Serious head-injury signs: the player loses consciousness and does not wake, cannot stay awake, has a seizure, develops new weakness or numbness, has trouble speaking, understanding, walking, or balancing, has vision or hearing problems, or has blood or clear fluid coming from the ears or nose. A severe or high-speed impact also warrants emergency assessment. The NHS lists these as reasons to call 999 after a head injury: NHS head injury and concussion guidance.
- Possible neck or spine injury: a significant impact followed by neck or back pain, deformity, weakness, numbness, or tingling. Keep the player still in the position found. Do not move them unless movement is needed for CPR or to control serious bleeding; see American Red Cross guidance for spinal injuries.
- Major injury or immediate danger: a visibly deformed limb, bone through the skin, heavy bleeding, signs of shock, impaired breathing, or inability to move safely. Treat a suspected serious bone injury as a possible fracture; do not try to straighten it. The American Red Cross broken-bone guidance identifies these warning signs.
- Severe heat illness during play: confusion, seizure, or unresponsiveness during exertion is an emergency. The CDC advises seeking medical care immediately for symptoms of heat-related illness in athletes: CDC guidance on heat and health.
While help is on the way, monitor breathing and responsiveness. If a neck or spine injury is possible, avoid moving the player and use only first-aid measures within your training, unless a life-saving action requires movement.
When a head injury needs urgent medical advice
Not every concerning head injury causes collapse. Seek urgent same-day medical advice if the player vomits or feels dizzy after a head impact, takes blood-thinning medication, was intoxicated when injured, or has other worrying symptoms. In the UK, the NHS advises calling 111 for urgent advice in relevant cases; elsewhere, use the local health service or urgent-care route. The NHS guidance is specific to the UK: NHS head injury and concussion guidance.

Head-injury symptoms can appear hours or days later. Watch for changes, and seek care if symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop; apparent improvement at the sideline does not establish that the player is safe to return.
What to do if you suspect concussion
Remove the player from play as soon as concussion is suspected, even if symptoms seem mild. Do not let them return that day. Arrange assessment by a healthcare professional; returning to sport requires medical clearance. The CDC states: “An athlete experiencing concussion danger signs needs to go to the emergency department right away.” Its sports-related concussion guidance is US-oriented: CDC: Returning to sports.

Possible fractures and other injuries
Arrange medical assessment for a possible fracture, especially if the limb looks bent or deformed, the player cannot or will not move it, there is numbness or tingling below the injury, or the injury involves the head, neck, spine, pelvis, or upper leg. Bone visible through skin, shock, heavy bleeding, or other severe signs call for emergency help. Do not straighten the limb. If the injury is not clearly minor, treat it as a possible fracture until a clinician assesses it.

When monitoring may be reasonable
If the injury appears minor and there are no emergency warning signs, monitoring may be appropriate. Seek professional care if symptoms persist, worsen, or the diagnosis is uncertain. For any head impact, keep in mind that symptoms may be delayed; do not use a brief improvement or the player’s wish to continue as a return-to-play test.
