Before buying a discounted game, match the listing to your exact console, generation, and format, then check what the edition includes and whether an upgrade costs extra. A franchise name or “next-gen upgrade” claim alone does not tell you what you’ll receive.
Start with the console and generation on the listing
Look for the specific platform named on the box or product page: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S. A game in the same franchise may be sold in several versions, and one version is not automatically the one you need.

Also check the format. A physical disc or game card will not work in a console that lacks the relevant drive or slot, and a digital code may have account or region conditions. Confirm that your console accepts the offered format before comparing prices.
What does the edition actually include?
Read the edition name and its itemized contents. Check whether the price covers the base game, downloadable content (DLC), an expansion, bonus items, or an upgrade pack. “Deluxe,” “complete,” or similar labels are not enough by themselves to establish which extras are included; the contents depend on the specific game.

If you want a newer console version, verify the publisher’s current upgrade terms for that title. Compare the total cost of the discounted game plus any required upgrade or add-on against an edition or bundle that includes what you want.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: distinguish the original game from the Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo describes a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as the original Switch game bundled with an upgrade pack. The upgrade pack’s contents vary by game, and features exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition can only be played on a Nintendo Switch 2. Owners of an eligible original Switch game may be able to buy the upgrade pack separately, so compare that combined cost with the bundled edition. Do not assume that a listing for the original Switch game includes the Switch 2 upgrade pack. Check the exact product name and the game’s upgrade eligibility.

Check the region as well as the game card
Nintendo says Switch game cards are generally not region-locked, with an exception for consoles and cards distributed in the Chinese region. However, Nintendo does not guarantee full service and support for all overseas software, even if it runs on an Americas-region console. Nintendo recommends software made for the console’s region; supported-region details may appear on the packaging or in the game’s Support Information. Read Nintendo’s regional compatibility FAQ if you are considering an imported copy.
PS4 and PS5: an upgrade is not automatic
The PS5 is backward compatible with the majority of PS4 games, but that does not mean every PS4 purchase includes a PS5 version. Check the offer for the particular game on PlayStation’s Games Support page and in the PS5 game hub.
If you are buying a PS4 disc
An eligible disc-based PS4 game may have an upgrade offer, but you need a PS5 with a disc drive. Keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play the upgraded digital game. A disc-based upgrade is therefore not a fit for a disc-free console.

If you are buying a digital PS4 game
An eligible digital PS4 game may offer an upgrade through its game hub on PS5. Check the offer and its conditions for that title; seeing “PS4” on a discounted listing does not promise a free or paid upgrade.

For games that support Xbox Smart Delivery, one digital purchase delivers the best version for the Xbox console being used. Support is title-dependent. The feature may also apply to a physical disc when the developer or publisher implements it. Check the specific game’s listing or publisher information rather than assuming every Xbox One purchase upgrades. Xbox explains the feature in its Smart Delivery overview.
Xbox Series S is all-digital and does not play game discs; see the Xbox Series S product information. On Series X, a backward-compatible Xbox One disc game must remain in the drive after installation to play.

A newer disc feature is still title-dependent
In an Xbox Wire announcement published August 26, 2026, Xbox VP Next Generation Jason Ronald said, “Our goal is to make it easier for those libraries to move forward with players.” The announcement described a feature for supported discs that Xbox Insiders could begin testing on August 31, 2026; it said most Xbox One and Series X disc games support the feature, but not every title would be available at launch. Treat this as a changing, supported-title feature—not a promise that any disc grants a digital entitlement. Check the game’s current terms in Xbox’s announcement.

- Confirm the exact title and platform. Check the game name and console generation printed on the product page or packaging.
- Confirm the format. Make sure your console accepts the physical game card, disc, digital purchase, or code being sold.
- Read the edition contents. Identify the included base game, DLC, expansion, bonus items, and any upgrade pack.
- Verify the upgrade for that game. Check whether it exists, whether it costs extra, and whether you must keep the original disc inserted.
- Check region and account conditions. Look for region-specific software and confirm it is supported for your console and account.
- Compare the full cost. Add any separate upgrade or add-on you need, then compare that total with a bundle that includes the desired content.
Upgrade eligibility, edition contents, and region or account restrictions depend on the specific game and can change. Use the publisher’s current information for that title rather than relying on generic “next-gen upgrade” wording.
