The clearest way to check whether your Samsung phone is unlocked is to try an active SIM from another carrier and see whether the phone registers on that carrier’s network. A message saying the phone is network locked or asking for an unlock code is strong evidence it is restricted. Some Samsung phones also show a Network Unlock status in Settings, but the option is not available on every model or carrier. If neither check gives a clear answer, ask the carrier that supplied the phone to verify its status.
Check for a network-lock status in Settings
On some Samsung phones, a carrier-specific menu exposes a network unlock option or status. One route listed by T-Mobile for Samsung devices is Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network Unlock. The exact label and location can vary, and the option may not appear at all. T-Mobile’s device guidance describes its process and device-specific steps.
If you find a status entry, read what it says rather than assuming that the presence of a Network Unlock menu means the device is unlocked. If the setting is missing or unclear, use another verification method.

If you can borrow or otherwise access a working SIM from a different carrier, this is a practical check of whether the phone can use another network. Turn the phone off, insert the SIM, restart it, and watch for a lock message. Samsung explains that a network-lock error means the device is restricted to a specific carrier; after an unlock, Samsung recommends testing again with a new SIM. - Power off the phone and insert the other carrier’s active SIM.
- Restart the phone and note any message. A network-lock notice or request for an unlock code indicates a restriction.
- If the phone accepts the SIM and registers on the other carrier’s network, that is useful evidence it is unlocked.
A SIM that is accepted but gets no service does not, by itself, prove the phone is locked. The SIM may not be activated, the account may have an issue, coverage may be unavailable, or the phone may not support the receiving carrier’s network or features.
Ask the carrier that supplied the phone
When the Settings check is unavailable or a SIM test is inconclusive, contact the original carrier through its official support channel. Give it the phone’s IMEI and ask specifically whether the device is network unlocked and whether it is eligible for use on the carrier you plan to join. Samsung directs customers with network-lock issues to their service provider, and carrier procedures differ by device and account. Samsung Canada’s NCK guidance also directs users to the carrier for network unlock help.

Do not assume that a payment, a waiting period, or a particular length of service automatically unlocks every Samsung phone. Eligibility and unlock steps depend on the carrier, country, device, and account. For example, AT&T’s unlock information describes eligibility requirements for its devices, while T-Mobile provides a carrier-specific device process.

Samsung’s carrier-related Settings screens can identify a carrier configuration or the network currently in use, but they are not universal proof that the phone is unlocked. Samsung lists these useful paths:

- Settings > About phone > Software information > Service provider software version shows service-provider software identifiers.
- Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status can show the current provider when a SIM is inserted.
Carrier branding, apps, and configuration can remain or change when the SIM or eSIM configuration changes. Samsung describes these screens as carrier and configuration information, not a definitive network-lock result. Tell a device network lock from other SIM problems
Network lock
A network lock restricts the phone to a particular carrier’s network. A network-lock error or unlock-code prompt after inserting another carrier’s SIM is a strong sign of this restriction.

SIM PIN or PUK prompt
A SIM PIN or PUK prompt is about the SIM card, not the phone’s carrier lock. Contact the SIM issuer for help with the SIM’s PIN or PUK; do not treat that prompt as confirmation that the handset is network locked.

Organization-managed SIM restriction
A work- or organization-managed Samsung device may have a separate SIM control policy. Samsung Knox Guard administrators can restrict SIM functionality or lock devices when an unlisted SIM is inserted. If the phone is managed by an employer or other organization, contact its administrator. Samsung Knox’s SIM control policy documentation describes these controls.

Unlocked does not necessarily mean compatible
A phone can be unlocked and still lack support for some of another carrier’s network bands, technologies, or features. Ask the receiving carrier to check the exact model and IMEI for compatibility separately from asking whether it is network locked. This also helps explain why a phone may accept a SIM yet fail to get service.
