No single symptom proves that a phone is tapped or monitored. Battery drain, overheating, unusual data use, or unexpected restarts can have ordinary causes; they are clues to investigate, not a diagnostic test. More concerning is a person repeatedly knowing private details or your precise location that you did not share. Check apps, accounts, and location sharing—and put your safety first if someone may be monitoring you.
What “tapped” can mean—and what it cannot tell you
People use “tapped” to describe several different kinds of monitoring. Stalkerware is software secretly installed on a phone that may expose location, messages, email, photos, online activity, or recordings from the microphone. But someone learning private information does not by itself establish that spyware is installed: access to a shared account or location-sharing feature can produce similar effects. A physical Bluetooth tracker is another distinct possibility; it can travel with you without accessing your phone’s messages or microphone.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says stalkerware and spyware apps are designed to avoid detection by the phone’s owner. That means an absence of obvious warning signs does not prove a device is clear, and an ordinary performance problem does not prove it is compromised. The FTC’s June 2026 consumer guidance presents warning signs as questions to consider, not a validated checklist or a way to calculate the odds of spying.

11 clues to investigate—not proof that your phone is tapped
These clues differ in strength. Repeatedly knowing information that was private is more specific than a battery or heat change, but none of the clues alone establishes how the information was obtained.

Information or access that deserves closer attention
- Someone knows your exact location when you have not told them. Consider whether location sharing, a shared Apple Account, Family Sharing, or a physical tracker could explain it as well as phone spyware.
- Someone knows private messages, email, photos, or online activity. This warrants checking who can access your accounts and devices; it does not identify a particular monitoring method.
- Someone has had unsupervised access to your phone. Physical access can make secret installation or changes more plausible, but it is not proof that either occurred.
Phone changes that are less specific
- Your battery drains faster than usual. Look for a change from your normal pattern, while remembering that battery age, settings, and ordinary app use can also affect battery life.
- You are unexpectedly using more mobile data. Compare usage with your own previous pattern; increased use has many possible causes.
- Your phone is overheating. Heat by itself is not evidence of surveillance.
- Your phone turns off and on unexpectedly. Unexpected restarts can be a reason to investigate, but they do not diagnose spyware.
- You notice unfamiliar apps or settings changes. Check what they are before drawing conclusions; unfamiliarity alone does not show that an app is malicious.
- You see unexpected permission or security warnings. Treat them as prompts to review settings, not as forensic confirmation.
- Your device behaves unusually in other ways. Record what changed and when; vague or isolated performance changes are especially difficult to interpret.
- You receive an unknown-tracker alert. This concerns a possible physical tag traveling with you, not proof that spyware is on your phone. Alerts can also have benign explanations, such as borrowing an item or traveling with someone who owns a tag.
The FTC specifically suggests asking whether your battery is draining faster, data use has increased unexpectedly, the phone is overheating or restarting unexpectedly, and an abuser knows your exact location without being told. Treat these as observations to check in context, not as a scorecard.
Check sharing and account access as well as installed apps
App checks alone can miss ways someone may see information. If it is safe to do so, review account access, location sharing, device access, and security settings. A setting change can alert a person who is monitoring you, so do not proceed on a phone you believe may be watched if that could put you at risk.

On iPhone
On an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check to review and manage sharing and access. Also consider which devices and people have access through your Apple Account, Family Sharing, and location or content sharing. Apple’s Personal Safety guide explains these checks. Safety Check is a sharing and access review, not a guarantee that a phone is free of spyware.
Apple’s Lockdown Mode guidance is for people who believe they may be targeted by highly sophisticated cyberattacks. It should not be treated as a general spyware detector.

On Android
Review security and privacy settings, Play Protect warnings, account warnings, available updates, app permissions, and the device lock. On Android 13 and later, security and privacy settings are generally grouped together; Android 12 and earlier may show separate Security and Privacy sections. Menu labels and organization vary by device and Android version. Google’s Android security and privacy guide describes the available checks. Warnings can help you spot issues, but they are not a forensic certification that the device is safe.
If a tracker alert appears
Google documents unknown Bluetooth tracker alerts on Android 6 and later for supported tracker types. Use the alert’s map and instructions, save relevant information, and move to a safe public place if you are concerned. Apple documents unwanted-tracking notifications for AirTags and Find My accessories on iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later. Google’s unknown tracker instructions and Apple’s unwanted-tracking guide cover their respective alerts. A tag alert points to a possible nearby tracker, not phone spyware.

If abuse may be involved, plan before changing anything
If a partner, former partner, or another person may be monitoring you, prioritize safety over getting a quick technical answer. The FTC warns that calls, research, or conversations made near a monitored phone may tip off an abuser, and that removing access can escalate abuse. Do not reflexively confront the person, remove an app, change settings, or reset the device.
- Use a different device the person cannot access to contact a domestic-violence advocate or trusted support person.
- Consider preserving evidence and making a safety plan before changing the phone.
- If you are in the United States, the FTC lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), thehotline.org, and text START to 88788. Hotline availability and crisis resources vary by location.

When—and how—to reset a phone
A factory reset may remove stalkerware, but it is not a universal first step. Before resetting, consider whether doing so could alert someone, destroy evidence, or remove data you need. Make a safety plan and preserve important evidence or data first. If you do reset, the FTC advises setting the phone up without restoring old apps from a backup, since a backup could reinstall stalkerware; download apps afresh from the app store instead. Depending on your situation, a new phone with an account the suspected person cannot access may be safer, but personal safety and evidence needs should guide that decision.
