A well-fitting bra has a secure, level band; cups that contain your breast tissue without persistent gaping or spillage; and straps that stay put without digging. Check all three while wearing the bra, then notice how it feels as you move. These signs can help you reassess fit, but no single symptom determines your size.
How to check your bra fit at home
- Settle the bra into place. Fasten it on a comfortable hook, position the cups, and make sure breast tissue is inside them rather than caught at the sides.
- Check the band. Look in a mirror or feel around your torso: the band should sit level and feel secure, not ride up or cause discomfort. A rising band can indicate that it is too large, but consider the cups and overall comfort before changing size. - Check the cups. Breast tissue should be contained without spilling over the top or sides. Look for persistent gaping or wrinkles, too: these can signal that the cup and your shape are not matching well. Size and cup shape can both affect the result. Wacoal UK and Elomi UK include these signs in their fitting advice.
- Check the straps. They should stay in place without digging into your shoulders. Breast Cancer Now suggests checking that two fingers fit comfortably beneath a strap. Read its guide to a well-fitting bra.
- Move normally. Raise your arms and go about ordinary movements. Notice whether the band shifts, the cups stop containing tissue, or the straps slip or become uncomfortable.
What common fit signs may mean

| Straps dig in or slip | Adjust them for a comfortable, stable fit, then reassess the bra if the problem persists. |
These are prompts to reassess, not definitive diagnoses. A different size or style may help, and the best adjustment depends on the combination of band, cup, strap and shape. Brand and style differences also mean there is no universal size conversion or single fit rule that resolves every symptom.
When to try another size or style
If discomfort or instability continues after adjusting the bra, compare another size or style using the same checks: band comfort and stability, full cup coverage without gaping, strap comfort, and how the bra feels during ordinary movement. Judge the whole fit rather than treating one symptom as proof that a particular size is wrong.

When to ask for fitting help
An in-person fitting is optional. Breast Cancer Now notes that department stores and specialist bra shops usually have trained fitters who can help. Its guide explains what to look for in a well-fitting bra.
