A completed water main repair does not, by itself, mean your tap water is safe to drink. Check the current notice from your local water utility or health department for your address, and follow its instructions until it is lifted. If you cannot confirm the status, contact them before using tap water normally.
Check whether an advisory applies to your address
Water main breaks can affect water availability or safety. The utility’s repair completion update is not the same as confirmation that household water is safe for every use. Look for an address-specific notice from the water utility or local health department, confirm whether it remains active, and follow the notice’s directions. The CDC’s emergency guidance includes water main breaks among events after which tap water may not be safe.
If the notice is unclear, or you cannot find one, call the utility or health department and ask whether an advisory applies to your address and what you may use tap water for. Water that looks clear or tastes normal is not a substitute for official guidance; the EPA explains that appearance alone does not establish safety.

| Notice type | What to do while it is active | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Boil-water advisory | Use commercially bottled water, or boil tap water as directed for drinking and food preparation. | Boiling can kill germs, but it does not make water containing harmful chemicals or toxins safe. |
| Do-not-drink advisory | Use commercially bottled water for drinking and cooking; check the notice for other restricted uses. | These advisories typically concern possible harmful chemicals or toxins. Do not try to make the water safe by boiling it. |
| Do-not-use advisory | Do not use tap water for any purpose while the notice is active. | Contact with the water itself may be dangerous. Follow the local notice’s exact restrictions. |
These are general distinctions, not a replacement for the instructions issued for your incident. See the CDC’s explanation of water advisory types and check the notice for rules on bathing, handwashing, and other activities.

If the notice is a boil-water advisory
CDC says to bring water to a full rolling boil for one minute, or for three minutes above 6,500 feet. Use bottled water instead if available or if your local notice directs you to do so. Boil water even if it has passed through a home filter, and follow local directions for uses beyond drinking and food preparation. The CDC’s emergency guidance gives the boiling directions.
Boiling is not a universal treatment. EPA says boiling does not destroy many chemical contaminants, and CDC warns that water with harmful chemicals or toxins will not become safe through boiling. If officials issue a do-not-drink or do-not-use advisory, follow it rather than boiling the water.

Protect drinking, cooking, ice, and connected appliances
During any drinking-water advisory, CDC says not to drink or use water or ice from appliances connected to the water line, including refrigerator dispensers. Ask the utility what cleaning or flushing those appliances need after the advisory ends.
- Do-not-drink advisory: CDC advises commercially bottled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, washing produce, making ice, and preparing infant formula. Check the local notice for other activities.
- Boil-water advisory: Use bottled or properly boiled water for drinking and food preparation, and follow local guidance for brushing teeth and other household uses.
- Do-not-use advisory: Do not use tap water for any purpose while the advisory is active.
For each advisory, the local notice controls. If it does not answer whether a particular use is allowed, ask the utility or health department before proceeding. CDC’s advisory guidance describes these distinctions.

After an advisory is lifted, check whether flushing is required
Do not assume that an “all clear” means every faucet or connected appliance is ready for normal use without further steps. EPA says the water system should tell customers whether, how, and to what extent to flush service lines, faucets, and connected appliances after an advisory is lifted. Flushing runs water through plumbing or outlets to clear residual standing water; the appropriate time depends on the plumbing and outlet, so there is no universal number of minutes to use.
Follow your utility’s specific instructions for household fixtures and appliances. CDC also advises flushing faucets and showerheads that have not been used in a while and after water pressure drops, but that general prevention advice does not replace the utility’s post-repair directions. See the EPA guidance on flushing after drinking-water advisories and the CDC’s emergency water guidance.

If you still have concerns, ask before arranging a test
Contact the water utility or health department with questions about the repair, the advisory, or continued concerns about your water. Ask what contaminants, if any, are relevant to the incident and whether testing is warranted; the reviewed federal guidance does not call for routine testing in every home after every repair. If testing is recommended, EPA points consumers to drinking-water laboratories certified by their state or territory. See the EPA’s consumer information on drinking water.
