Open the payment in your Venmo transaction feed. The transaction detail shows its status and where the money went. If it says Completed, Venmo says the money has been sent. If it says Pending, the payment has not yet reached the recipient, and the detail tells you why. Notifications are not proof either way, so check the transaction itself.
Check the payment’s status in the app
Venmo’s help content describes the transaction detail as the place to see a payment’s status or destination. That makes it the most reliable check you have, more useful than a push notification or a missing alert.

- Open the Venmo app and tap the Me tab.
- Find the payment in your transactions feed and tap it.
- Read the status and the displayed recipient. Confirm the recipient is the username, phone number, or email address you intended to pay.
Venmo’s Payments & Requests FAQ says that when you send a payment, it reaches the recipient’s Venmo account right away in most instances. The exceptions are the processing and recipient-setup cases described below.
What Completed and Pending mean
The two statuses point to different situations, and they need different responses.

Why a payment stays Pending
Venmo’s help article on Pending personal payments identifies two common causes. The article does not list a third cause for personal payments, so if neither applies, use the transaction detail to see what it shows and contact Venmo Support.
Bank processing
Some bank-funded payments take longer to complete. Venmo’s stated range is 3–5 business days for these payments, and the transaction feed displays an estimated completion date. Once the payment completes, it reaches the recipient’s Venmo balance and both parties are notified. Do not apply this timeline to every payment type; Venmo’s guidance only gives it for this category.

Unverified recipient contact or account setup
A payment to a phone number or email address that is not verified or linked to a Venmo account stays Pending. Your payment method may already have been charged, but the money does not reach the recipient until they verify that contact detail or complete account setup. Venmo says the sender may take the payment back while the contact is not associated with an active Venmo account. An unclaimed payment expires after 30 days.

If the recipient says nothing arrived

- Compare the username, phone number, or email in your transaction detail with the one the recipient uses. A single wrong character sends money to someone else or to an unclaimed contact.
- Check the status. A Completed payment has been sent; the recipient should look in their own Venmo account for it.
- If the payment is Pending, follow the matching path in the table above.
- If the status and details are correct but the recipient still cannot find the money, contact Venmo Support.
If the payment went to the wrong person
Venmo says most payments cannot be canceled once sent. The exception is a pending payment to unverified contact details, which may offer a Take Back option when the recipient is not linked to an active account. Check the transaction detail for that option.
- Sent to the wrong friend: Ask that person to repay you. If they will not, or you need further help, contact Venmo Support.
- Received money unexpectedly from a stranger: Do not send the money back yourself. Venmo advises contacting Support for help returning it.

Why notifications are not enough
A notification can confirm activity, but it is not a receipt. You can adjust which alerts you get under Me > Settings > Notifications. Venmo’s Notification Settings article says email notifications for “Payment sent” cannot be turned off. Venmo’s guidance does not say that a missing push notification means a payment failed or was not received, so use the transaction detail as the authority.
